Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Jazz not only have the best record in the NBA, but they are also tops with a 20-7 ATS mark. They will finish up a stretch of eight consecutive games versus Eastern Conference teams, which they’ve handled with ease. Utah has gone through a collection of the East’s better squads in each of its last four games—beating and covering against the Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, and Indiana Pacers.

Record-wise, the 76ers will be the best of this recent batch but it’s worth monitoring the status of star center Joel Embiid, who is listed as questionable with back tightness. His availability will obviously play a major role in determining how this game will shake out, as Philadelphia is 1-4 without him and 17-5 with the MVP candidate and his near-30 points per game in the lineup.

Philadelphia plays much better at home, entering this matchup 5-8-1 ATS on the road and with a 5-6 record SU against teams over .500 – compared to a mark of 13-3 versus sub-.500 teams. The 76ers have lost three of their last five and one of those wins came against a Brooklyn Nets team that was without both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

Utah will have a letdown game soon but it’s hard to overlook the fact that the Jazz are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 home games and are feasting on everyone. When they win, they typically cover. And they win often.

PREDICTION: Utah -7.5 (-110)

Covers NBA betting analysis

Over/Under pick

Utah gets it done on both sides of the ball, which could help explain why it’s only 12-15 O/U on the season. The Jazz are sixth in the NBA in points per game (115.0) and rank third in points allowed, surrendering 105.7 per contest. They’ve held opponents under the league-average mark of 111.9 points per game in nine of their last 12 contests, hitting the Over in six of them.

The 76ers, meanwhile, are similar in that sense, ranking in the Top 10 in both points scored and allowed per game, and both teams are Top 5 in defensive efficiency and opponents’ field goal percentage.

Utah is one of the best teams in the league at limiting opponents from deep, while the Sixers rank 28th in 3-point attempts per game, so Philadelphia isn’t likely to do much of its scoring from the outside which will cap its total upside.

Even if the Jazz are rolling from deep as they are accustomed to doing – they are shooting 39.2 percent from long range on an NBA-high 42.3 attempts per game – these two strong defensive teams should each buckle down after having the night off going into this outing.

Throw in the fact that the Jazz are 23rd in the NBA in pace, and it would probably suit them just fine to slow this game down and win a lower-scoring defensive battle.

PREDICTION: Under 226.5 (-110)
