The Philadelphia 76ers are on fire right now, with their only recent blemish being a loss to Portland a week ago.

The Sixers will look to get revenge Wednesday night, with NBA betting odds setting the East’s top team as a 5.5-point favorite over a Portland team that has struggled against the spread on the road.

We break down how Philly will try to avenge that previous loss in our free NBA picks and predictions for 76ers vs. Trail Blazers, with tip-off set for 10:00 p.m. ET.

Against the Spread (ATS) Pick

The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the hottest teams in the Association right now, going 6-1 SU (5-1-1 ATS) in their last seven games and sitting atop the Eastern Conference at 18-7. Their lone loss was against these Trail Blazers in a bizarre game where both Damian Lillard and Ben Simmons did not play and Portland had just nine players total.

Star center Joel Embiid went off for 37 points in that contest and he’s been on fire lately, averaging 33.1 points and 10.5 rebounds per game over his last 10 contests. While we expect him to torch Portland again, it’s actually the return of Simmons for this rematch that could truly swing the contest.

One of the better perimeter defensive players in the league, Simmons is tied for seventh in the NBA (along with Embiid and a number of other players) for defensive win shares and he has been a big reason for Philly holding opponents to the eight-fewest points per game—and forcing opposing point guards into the third-lowest shooting percentage in the league. He should expect to see plenty of time guarding Lillard, as the Blazers PG is averaging 32.0 points per contest over his last 10 games but has struggled (by his standards) with just 23.8 ppg in four career head-to-head meetings against Simmons.

This will be Portland’s second straight home game following a six-game road trip and while it covered in Tuesday’s win over Orlando – and five of its last seven overall – the Blazers are actually just 3-8 ATS at the Moda Center this season. With Embiid continuing to do his thing, Simmons hounding Lillard (with not much in terms of supporting scoring to pick up the slack), and the Blazers’ early-season struggles at home, we’re siding with the Sixers tonight.

PREDICTION: Philadelphia -5.5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

The Sixers are a formidable defensive club, but they aren’t one-dimensional, ranking ninth in the league with 114.3 points per game. The Sixers have seen the Under hit in two straight contests, but they topped 230 total points in each game and have seen their totals finish at 229 or higher in four of their last five overall.

While Portland, seventh in the league in scoring, has seen its previous two games fall short of totals of 220 and 215, those games came against Orlando and New York (clubs that are 28th and 30th, respectively, in the NBA in points). Prior to those games, the Blazers saw the Over cash in seven out of eight matchups, giving up at least 121 points five times.

In the previous matchup, again without Lillard or Simmons, these clubs combined for 226 points. Having them both on the court tonight should be able to contribute to at least four additional points and with the Sixers clicking right now, I’d expect them to do the heavy lifting to get this Over the total.

PREDICTION: Over 229.5 (-110)

Player Prop Pick

We mentioned that Embiid torched poor Enes Kanter and Portland for 37 points in the previous meeting, and we don’t think that was an isolated incident. The Blazers are 27th in the league in points allowed per game to opposing centers, with Orlando’s Nikola Vucevic most recently dropping 27 against them on Tuesday.

A lot of that has to do with Kanter’s poor defensive play. Not only can you tell that defense isn’t, umm, his forte from the eye test, but analytics back it up—he currently contributes negative-1.9 points per 100 possessions (compared to a league-average player) with his defensive “effort.”

Embiid has scored at least 33 points in seven of his last nine games, and while I don’t particularly like his 41.5 points+rebounds total (because one thing Kanter can do is grab boards) I will jump all over his straight point total, which is a juicy 29.5.

PREDICTION: Joel Embiid Over 29.5 points (-115)

76ers vs Trail Blazers Betting Card

  • Philadelphia -5.5 (-110)
  • Over 229.5 (-110)
  • Joel Embiid Over 29.5 points (-115)
