The James Madison Dukes are the class of the CAA college football conference and FCS elites. The Dukes have won the CAA title and played in the FCS championship game in three of the last four seasons, including a title in 2016.

However, the New Hampshire Wildcats and the Albany Great Danes would like to have a word. The Wildcats and Great Danes should both be in the mix for the CAA North Division Crown, so it’s no surprise the line for this matchup is so tight.

Albany Great Danes vs New Hampshire Wildcats betting preview

It could be a chilly and blustery night at Wildcat Stadium in Durham, New Hampshire. The forecast is calling for mostly cloudy skies with winds of 12-to-15 miles per hour gusting towards the southeastern endzone. That wind will have temperatures feeling like a face-numbing 13 degrees at kickoff.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Albany Great Danes are looking to build off an impressive 2019 campaign in which they went 6-2 in the CAA and won their first-ever FCS playoff game. That included a 24-17 win over this same New Hampshire Wildcats program.

The big reason that Albany should have optimism this spring is because of the big arm they will have under center. Quarterback Jeff Undercuffler not only has an all-time great name but set the FCS single-season freshman record with 41 touchdown passes in 2019.

Undercuffler also has the luxury of handing the ball off to one of the best running backs in the CAA, Karl Mofor. The senior back led the CAA in rushing a season ago, rumbling for 1,290 yards to go along with 12 total scores.

Undercuffler and co. (sorry, just can’t stop typing that name) will be in tough against a New Hampshire defense that was one of the best in the conference, finishing second in total and scoring defense last season.

What holds New Hampshire back is their offense. The Wildcats ranked 11th out of 12 in total offense in the CAA and dead last in scoring, putting up just 20.2 points per game. New Hampshire has apparently recruited some young talent on offense, but this is a tough game to be thrown into the fire, as Albany’s defense wasn’t too shabby in its own right.

The Great Danes’ balance and Undercuffler’s arm will be the difference here. While the New Hampshire defense should be great once again, they were a little susceptible to the pass, ranking sixth in the conference in yards per game. Look for Undercuffler to make a big play or two down the field to secure the win. With the line close to a pick’em, find the best value you can, but take the Danes.

PREDICTION: Albany -0.5 (-110)

Over/Under pick

The total for this matchup of CAA powerhouses is on the board at a relatively low 44. That’s not too surprising considering the Great Danes allowed 25.1 points per game in 2019, while the Wildcats gave up just 20.1 per contest.

Last year’s matchup between these two would have snuck Under this number, but there is a chance the with another year of experience the Albany offense can be even better, while New Hampshire should get a bit of a boost from playing at home. We’re betting this one squeaks above the number.

PREDICTION: Over 44 (-110)
