The Anaheim Ducks have locked up goaltender John Gibson to an eight-year contract extension with the new deal reportedly carrying an average annual value of $6.4 million.

Gibson’s previous contract, which was set to expire after the 2018-19 NHL season, had a cap hit of $2.3 million. The 25-year-old goaltender posted a 31-18-7 record last year with a 2.43 goals-against average. He also finished the season with a .926 save percentage and four shutouts.

According to oddsmakers, the Ducks are 28/1 long shots to win the 2019 Stanley Cup. They’re also 12/1 to win the Western Conference Finals, which puts them behind the Nashville Predators (5/1), Vegas Golden Knights (5/1), Winnipeg Jets (5/1) and the San Jose Sharks (10/1).

“I believe in John Gibson, as does everyone in the organization,” Ducks general manager Bob Murray said. “This is obviously a major commitment by the club, but one we feel strongly about. John is equally committed to being a Duck. He is only now entering the prime of his career, and we are all confident his best is yet to come.”
