Moneyline pick

In their return from the first break of their season, in February, the Avalanche were clearly rusty in a 1-0 loss to the Golden Knights. So, after another week-long break due to COVID protocol, some rust was to be expected out of Colorado. Rusty they were, with the Avs taking an early penalty which resulted in a Blues goal for Jaden Schwartz.

However, going down a goal seemingly acted as vinegar on the team’s rust. Colorado tied it up in the first then came out flying in the second period, eventually holding a 3-2 lead before adding an empty netter. Their depth was on full display too, as they were without stud winger Mikko Rantanen due to COVID tracing, but Andre Burakovsky stepped up with two goals. Vezina candidate Philipp Grubauer was out as well, but the newly acquired Devan Dubnyk stopped 25 shots in his place.

The Avalanche’s rapid return to form on Thursday night is yet another indicator they are the powerhouse of the league, with elite play at both ends and just three regulation losses since March 1. That includes utter domination of the Blues, with the Avs 5-0 in their last five against St. Louis, with a 21-8 scoreline over that stretch. Colorado should make it 6-0 over the last six on Saturday.

PREDICTION: Avalanche (-160)

Over/Under pick

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare’s empty netter with just over 90 seconds left in Thursday’s Colorado win not only sealed victory for the Avs, but gave Over/Under bettors a push on the total of 6. Saturday will see the sixth total of 6 between these two teams on the year, with the previous five going 1-3-1 O/U.

If there was ever a spot for St. Louis to pepper Colorado, it was on Thursday night. Not only were the Avs returning from a long break, but with Grubauer out, they were turning to the veteran Dubnyk for his second start in a Colorado sweater.

Dubnyk, while not an overly inspiring acquisition, was a much-needed one. He arrived in Colorado having started 13 games in 2021, with a .898 save percentage and 3.18 goals against average. Through two games with the Avs, he looks rejuvenated, turning away 56 of 61 shots for a .918 save percentage and 2.51 GAA.

With Colorado and St. Louis going back to Dubnyk and Jordan Binnington, respectively, we’re backing the Under here.

PREDICTION: Under 6 (-115)
