How Much Did Cards’ SB Odds Improve?

Cardinals Trade for DeAndre Hopkins, 3/17/20 Arizona Super Bowl LV Odds

After the Cardinals made a huge splash on Monday by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins from the Texans, what are Arizona’s current odds to win the 2021 Super Bowl?

The Trade

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on Monday that the Cardinals acquired Hopkins and a fourth-round pick from the Texans in exchange for running back David Johnson and a second-round pick. The trade shocked the NFL world, as most were shocked that Houston would part with one of the best receivers in the league for a running back that Arizona clearly no longer intended to use in Kliff Kingsbury’s offense.

Hopkins caught 104 passes for 1,165 yards and seven touchdowns in what was viewed as a down year for him. There was no signs of him slowing down and it’s not as if age is a concern for Hopkins, who won’t turn 28 until June. The acquisition is a major upgrade for second-year quarterback Kyler Murray, who didn’t have many weapons around him in Arizona a year ago. Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson loses his top receiving threat, all to gain a running back in a league that devalues the position in most NFL cities.

The Odds

According to oddsmakers from online sports book, the Cardinals are now 60/1 to win the 2021 Super Bowl while the Texans are now 40/1. Before the trade, Arizona was 100/1 to win next year’s NFL title and 40/1 to win the conference, while Houston was still 40/1 to win the Super Bowl and 20/1 to win the AFC title. The Cardinals are now 30/1 to win the NFC title while the Texans remain 20/1 to win the AFC title.

It’s interesting that the Texans’ odds didn’t change despite losing Hopkins. Most of that is likely rooted in the fact that Houston still has Watson. Will Fuller is also more than capable of being a legitimate No. 1 receiver and Johnson has plenty of skills as a pass-catcher himself. That said, neither player is Hopkins, who has emerged as one of the best receivers in the NFL over the years.
