There was a bit of a surprise in college basketball betting last weekend when the Kansas Jayhawks withdrew from the Big 12 Tournament just before the semifinals. The Jayhawks return to the hardwood on Saturday, however, in a first-round matchup against the Big Sky champion Eastern Washington Eagles.

The Jayhawks are the No. 3 seed in the West Region and opened as 11-point favorites against the No. 14 Eagles.

Here are our best free March Madness picks and predictions for Eastern Washington vs. Kansas on Saturday, March 20, with tipoff at 1:15 p.m. ET.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Jayhawks were already missing their best big man in David McCormack and backup guard Tristan Enaruna when they backed out of their conference tourney due to additional COVID-19 concerns. While Kansas coach Bill Self has said that three Jayhawks players won’t travel with the team earlier in the week due to medical protocols, there’s a possibility they could make it to Indianapolis closer to game time and be ready for the NCAA Tournament.

The Jayhawks have been red hot, going 8-1 SU and 7-1-1 ATS over their last nine games, including a 69-62 win over Oklahoma last Thursday. That stretch was headlined by double-digit wins against Baylor and Oklahoma State, along with a victory against Texas Tech, while their only loss came in overtime on the road against eventual Big 12 champs Texas. They are among the tournament title favorites, entering with +4,000 March Madness odds.

Eastern Washington is coming off a 65-55 win over Montana State in the Big Sky Tournament finals and is now 13-1 SU and 10-4 ATS in its previous 14 contests. The Eagles are led by Big Sky MVP Tanner Groves (16.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game) and are a high-scoring team that averages 79.3 points per game.

Despite playing in a small conference, the Eagles did have a few games against Power Six programs earlier in the season. While they kept things very close against Arizona and Washington State, they were clobbered by 17 points against Oregon. They averaged 62.3 ppg on just 38.4 percent shooting across all three of those contests.

The Eagles have also been held to 66 or fewer points in three of their last five games. If that’s all they could muster against the likes of Montana State, Northern Arizona, and Idaho State, they are going to be in trouble against the dominant Jayhawks defense. Take Kansas to win and cover.

PREDICTION: Kansas -11 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

Eastern Washington puts up a lot of points and plays at a faster pace but they haven’t faced anybody with the Jayhawks’ length, athleticism, and defensive acumen. The closest example would probably be the Oregon Ducks, who held them to 52 points on 33 percent shooting.

The Jayhawks play at a slower pace and are terrific on the defensive end of the floor, allowing 65.9 ppg on just 40.4 percent shooting. They haven’t allowed more than 66 points in regulation in their last nine games and limited Baylor’s elite offense to 58 points on 35 percent shooting just three weeks ago.

Under trends also abound for both teams with the Eagles 5-0 to the Under in their last five games and the Jayhawks cashing the Under in six of their previous seven contests. Back the Under again.

PREDICTION: Under 143 (-110)

First Half Pick

There’s a possibility that Kansas could come out a bit slower in this game, especially if any of the three players who join the team later in the week are starters.

Keep in mind that the last two times the Jayhawks faced overmatched foes in Texas-El Paso and Iowa State they trailed the Miners by 14 points at halftime and were tied with the Cyclones.

In the Eagles’ earlier season matchups with Arizona and Washington State, they actually led at halftime before fading in the second half. Consider backing the underdogs on the first half spread before the Jayhawks pull away in the second.

PREDICTION: First Half Eastern Washington +6.5 (-110)
