England vs Germany predictions

Moneyline pick

While England had a few nervous moments during the group stage and did not attack with the level of intent some want them to, they were relatively untroubled in going undefeated and winning their group on seven points. With France and Portugal proving in recent history that it’s pragmatism, not expansive soccer, that wins tournaments, England have to feel confident going into the knockout stages.

Concerns over their backline ahead of Euro 2020 have been calmed by a solid performance over the course of the group stage, with first-choice center-back pairing John Stones and Harry Maguire reunited for the group stage finale. While the midfield’s best performance came in the first group stage game, they’ve controlled every game so far and, like Maguire, England’s best midfielder Jordan Henderson only made his tournament debut against the Czech Republic.

Best of all, despite a quiet start for a vaunted attack, there’s reason to believe the best is yet to come. Mercurial attacker Jack Grealish has finally cracked the starting lineup and should retain his place against Germany, Raheem Sterling has both England goals and has never played better in an England shirt, and Harry Kane seemingly woke up by the end of the group stage.

While England was given the luxury of playing themselves into the tournament, Germany was dropped into a snake pit. Their tournament began against reigning World Cup champions France, a match in which they were roundly outplayed and lucky to lose just 1-0 in a group where goal differential would become crucial. A bizarre, seemingly anomalous domination of Portugal followed in a match that saw them tear apart the 2016 Euro champions in a 4-2 victory. However, the mediocre Germany of recent history reappeared in the finale against Hungary in a wild final day for the Group of Death.

Neither of these teams proved to be tournament contenders in the group stage, but England appeared competent throughout the group stage, and while their execution wasn’t flawless, their intentions were clear. Germany, on other hand, were an erratic mess that lacked structure and thrived off chaos. Though that got them through the Group of Death, without the benefit of playing in Munich, Germany’s tournament ends in the Round of 16.

PREDICTION: England (+150)

Half-time pick

While England have been supremely content to methodically navigate each match at Euro 2020 so far, occasionally getting booed by the Wembley crowd for a perceived lack of urgency, they have been lively out of the gate in every game.

Their high press, which has been executed consistently well so far, and lofted balls over the top, have been particularly effective early in matches. Though England have scored just twice at Euro 2020, they have been unlucky not to have had their games take on completely different complexions.

In the sixth minute in the group stage opener against Croatia, Phil Foden cut in and curled a terrific effort which hit the post. In the 11th minute against Scotland, center-back John Stones had a clear header from six yards out that was missed. In the group stage finale against the Czech Republic, Raheem Sterling had a beautiful chipped ball hit the post in the fourth minute, then got his goal in the 12th.

That sets things up for a bright start on Tuesday, as England get to face one of the tournament’s slow starters in Germany. They have conceded inside of 20 minutes in every match so far, and were lucky not to be down by more than just one goal against France early on.

England have been unlucky not to take control early in every match so far, but they’ll do so against Germany and settle the nerves of home supporters.

PREDICTION: Half-time pick – England (+225)
