Indiana Sports Betting Bounces Back in May, But Revenue Shrinks

The Indiana Gaming Commission recently reported a handle of $254.4 million for the state’s sportsbooks in May, up from $236.4 million in April. The state’s revenue, however, did drop from the previous month.

Sports betting bounced back in Indiana in May, with wagering in the Hoosier State rising again after a dip in April. 

The Indiana Gaming Commission recently reported a handle of $254.4 million for the state’s sportsbooks in May, up from $236.4 million in April.  

After paying out winners and making other adjustments, sports wagering revenue was $18.8 million last month, down from nearly $20.1 million the month prior and making for a hold of about 7.4 percent. Tax collected from the sportsbooks in May was nearly $1.8 million, which was also down from April’s $1.9 million.

According to the gaming commission, the most popular sport among Indiana bettors in May was basketball, as it garnered about $82.4 million in wagers. 

DraftKings on top 

The top sportsbook in Indiana last month, in terms of handle, was the Ameristar Casino in East Chicago, with approximately $89.2 million. 

Of that, $81.8 million in handle for the Ameristar came from one of the casino’s digital partners, DraftKings Sportsbook. Another $2.9 million went to the casino’s other digital partner, Score Media and Gaming Inc., and its theScore Bet app. Retail sportsbook wagers for the Ameristar were approximately $4.4 million.

The Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City and partner FanDuel finished second in handle once again last month, with the pair taking approximately $79.3 million in wagers online and $704,224 in bets placed in person.

Legal sports betting began in Indiana back in 2019, making it the 13th state in the United States with legal wagering. Bets can be placed both online and in-person in the state.
