Moneyline Pick

This line is very tight, which makes sense as both New York squads enter with identical 4-4-2 records and having similar results (albeit polar opposites) in their head-to-head meetings earlier this year. They clashed in the season opener with the Islanders blanking the Rangers 4-0, but the Rangers returned the favor two days later winning 5-0.

That said, based on current form the Rangers should have the edge. The Blueshirts are 3-1 in their last four games and are coming off back-to-back wins over the Capitals and Penguins. The Islanders are coming off a win of their own against Pittsburgh but prior to that had lost five in a row.

The Isles have really struggled on the offensive end of the ice, ranking 29th in the league in scoring with 2.30 goals per game and generating 9.28 high-danger chances per 60 minutes (23rd).

While the Rangers haven’t been consistent on offense they have been more effective than the Isles, averaging 2.9 gpg and 11.5 HDCF/60. The Rangers also rank sixth in the league in Corsi For percentage (a statistic which measures a team’s ability to control possession), while the Islanders rank just 22nd in that category.

With the Rangers also winning five of the last seven meetings between these New York rivals, back them at Madison Square Garden tonight.

PREDICTION: New York Rangers (-115)

Over/Under Pick

We mentioned that the Isles have struggled to put the puck in the net this year but they have succeeded in large part due to the strong goaltending of Semyon Varlamov and a defense that limits foes to the fourth-fewest high-danger chances per 60 minutes in the league. Varlamov is 4-2-1 with a 2.14 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage and he shut out the Rangers in the season opener.

Igor Shesterkin was in nets for the Rangers in that game and allowed four goals on 33 shots. However, Shesterkin has played very well recently, winning three straight and turning aside 79 of 84 shots over that span.

The Blueshirts might opt to go with Alexandar Georgiev between the pipes and that wouldn’t be a bad option with the youngster going 6-2 with a 1.80 GAA and a save percentage of .941 against the Islanders in his career.

The Rangers’ play on special teams has also made them a solid Under bet. They rank 24th in the league on the power play but have been excellent on the penalty kill, having killed off 17 of their opponents’ 18 opportunities with the man-advantage over the last four games.

The Under is 9-3-1 in the Islanders last 13 games overall, while cashing in five of the Rangers previous six contests. Back the Under again.

PREDICTION: Under 5.5 (-110)
