It certainly feels like we've been here before. The favored New England Patriots matched up against the second-guessed New York Giants in the Super Bowl... it certainly has a familiar ring to it. Okay! enough playing around. Most people recognize that this is the exact same match-up as Super Bowl XLII, and has a very similar feel to it. There are several differences between the 2008 battle in the desert and this year's Indianapolis Super Bowl debut.
The major difference is this year's lack of hype about the Patriots. In 2008 the Patriots were 18-0 going into the Super Bowl, having just finished an unprecedented 16-0 regular season, and two convincing wins in the post season. The 2007-2008 Patriots seemed like an unstoppable force, until they met Eli Manning and the Giants in the Super Bowl. This year the Patriots are still a great team, but much of the invincibility they used to possess has encompassed the Green Bay Packers this season, who fell to the Giants at home. The Giants seem to be perennial "Giant Killers."
The game promises a lot of action and suspense, with the two quarterbacks being the primary media focus. There will be two former Super Bowl MVPs under center, calling the plays, and guiding their teams. Both squads are coming into this game with massive amounts of momentum and heart. Tom Brady and the Patriots want revenge for their near perfect season being taken away, and Tom Coughlin wants to shut his critics up. Before the 2007 season Coughlin was on the chopping block, and he walked away with a Super Bowl ring. Midway through this season, critics were again offering Coughlin's head on a platter. Will this be the driving factor for him? You better believe it. This game is going to come down to the wire, and it will be so close, it will be determined in overtime. The oddsmakers have the Patriots ast a 3 point favorite. The spread is right, the team is wrong.
Prediction: New York 24, New England 21
