The Los Angeles Lakers successfully trod water for weeks, weathering the absences of both Anthony Davis and LeBron James without plummeting down the West standings.

The Lakers currently sit fifth, two and a half games up on tonight’s opponent: the Dallas Mavericks.

These squads faced off Thursday night, with Dallas securing a 115-110 victory. We’re breaking down the NBA betting prospects for the rematch with our Lakers vs. Mavericks picks and predictions for Saturday, April 24.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

This should be a closely contested matchup again tonight, and the outcome will largely hinge on the statuses of two big men.

The Lakers got Anthony Davis back Thursday night, ending an uncertain but spirited stretch in which their supporting cast roundly overachieved to keep their playoff standing afloat. Davis played only 16 minutes in his return, and while both he and coach Frank Vogel were confident in how he looked and felt, don’t expect a huge spike in his minutes tonight.

On the other hand, and stop us if you’ve heard this before: the Mavericks lost Kristaps Porzingis to an ankle injury late in Thursday’s game. Porzingis is officially listed as questionable tonight, but considering his porcelain composition and seemingly perpetual injury risk, we’d wager the Mavs rest him.

That would leave Luka Doncic without his primary running mate, a predicament he’s already faced in 19 of Dallas’ 58 games. Porzingis’ absence would allow the Lakers’ top-ranked defense to key in more on Luka, while also negating a stretch threat that would drag rebound addict Andre Drummond away from playing Hungry Hungry Hippos on the glass.

The Lakers are still playing inspiring ball, especially Dennis Schroder, who has stepped up as a primary initiator in LeBron’s absence and torched Dallas for 25 points and 13 assists on Thursday. L.A. played Dallas tough, and was in that game until the final minutes.

We like the Lakers to possibly even win this game outright, given Porzingis’ possible absence and sub-optimal state should he play. But we’re taking them on the spread, with any upside from more Davis minutes being icing on the cake.

PREDICTION: Lakers +2 (-110)

Over/Under pick

The Lakers are surprisingly on a 7-2 Over trend right now, not exactly what you’d expect from a defense-first team that’s been down two superstars. Likewise, Dallas’ wildly fluctuating output has seen them hit the Over in five of their past seven, after a stretch of six straight Unders.

Another Over indicator is that these two combined to score 225 Thursday night, safely covering tonight’s 217.5 total.

But screw the trends. We’re bucking.

First off, the Lakers have averaged just 103 ppg in regulation since LeBron’s injury. Davis provides them with an alpha scorer while he’s on the court, but is also an elite defender. In either case, don’t expect him to see full minutes tonight.

To boot, Dallas’ offense possibly sees Porzingis’ 20 ppg wiped from their ledger, with a less-than-consistent supporting cast to help permeate the NBA’s best defense.

The Lakers play at a median pace, while Dallas slogs along at the NBA’s fourth-fewest possessions per game. Without Porzingis to space the floor and create looks, Doncic will have to do plenty for the Mavs’ offense, which could lead to more deliberate possessions and an even slower pace.

You can also expect two smart coaches to make minor tweaks with two days of game tape under their belts. All that has us leaning Under for tonight.

PREDICTION: Under 217.5 (-110)

Player prop pick

The books still aren’t giving Schroder a ton of love, setting his points total at 16.5 despite him averaging almost 19 over his past seven games and topping this mark five times in that span.

Schroder had arguably his best game of the season on Thursday and his confidence should be riding at an all-time high as the heartbeat of L.A.’s offense right now. Look for him to continue attacking an average-at-best defense and breeze past this prop, which we’re okay paying a bit of juice to get at this total.

PREDICTION: Dennis Schroder Over 165 points (-130)
