Lakers vs Wizards NBA Odds, Picks and Predictions April 28

Updated: April 28, 2021

The Washington Wizards may no longer tout a lengthy winning streak but have a great chance to pick up where they left off, hosting the Los Angeles Lakers Wednesday.

Washington had its eight-game run snapped in an overtime loss to San Antonio on Monday and enter this game as small NBA betting underdogs at home. The Lakers are wrapping up a four-game road trip in D.C. and continue to work star forward Anthony Davis back into form after he missed two months due to injury.

Here are our free NBA picks and predictions for Lakers vs. Wizards on April 28.

Betting trend to know

Against the spread (ATS) pick

Washington’s winning streak was powered by points with the Wizards scoring nearly 124 points per game over their last nine outings, including 133 points in regulation versus the Spurs on Monday.

A good chunk of those buckets has been fueled by pestering defense, with Washington forcing foes into almost 16 turnovers per game and flipping those errors into an average of 18 points off turnovers. The Wizards didn’t have great success doing so against surehanded San Antonio last time out — forcing only six turnovers for 10 points — but now host one of the most turnover-prone teams in the NBA.

The Lakers barf the ball up 15.4 times per contest on the season and opponents translate those into an average of almost 17 points against. Not only is L.A. trying to work Davis back into the offense but the backcourt is banged up as well, with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Alex Caruso both missing time in recent games.

Cohesion and chemistry could be an issue, especially with the Lakers looking forward to a return home (and the return of LeBron James in the near future).

Washington’s backcourt is humming right now, led by Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal, who have combined for 53.3 points per game in April. That duo scored a collective 65 points when the Wiz took down Los Angeles 127-124 in overtime back February 22. The Lakers turned the ball over 20 times in that contest and gave up 28 points off those miscues.

There’s plenty of motivation behind the Wizards’ late-season surge, lifting Washington to 10th in the Eastern Conference and holding the final ticket to the play-in tournament. The Wizards are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games overall and we like them to cover as short home dogs Wednesday.

PREDICTION: Washington +3 (-110)

Covers NBA betting analysis

Over/Under pick

The Wizards play controlled chaos, running an NBA-high pace rating of 104.53 and forcing opponents into that speedy tempo. Washington is fueled by the motors of Westbrook and Beal but also has a frontcourt that can run the floor and fill the lanes, ranked as the second-best transition offense in the NBA.

That versatile frontcourt got a bit stronger this week too. Forward Rui Hachimura returned to the court Monday after missing four games with a knee injury, scoring 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, along with six rebounds, in the loss to the Spurs. The 6-foot-8 second-year player out of Gonzaga is averaging 13.5 points and 5.7 rebounds on the season and he had 15 points and six boards in the last meeting with Los Angeles.

Washington will try to put the Lakers’ lumbering frontcourt on their heels. While L.A. is solid versus most transition teams, it got sped up to a pace rating of 104.15 in the previous meeting with the Wiz. The Lakers haven’t faced a team that plays at this tempo since Milwaukee on March 31, in which they allowed 112 points to the Bucks.

PREDICTION: Over 224 (-110)

Player prop pick

Westbrook has been a triple-double machine during the Wizards’ run, recently posting his 175th career triple-double versus San Antonio on Monday.

The California native has a soft spot for the Purple and Gold, which is why he goes so damn hard against the Lakers. For his career, Westbrook averages 24 points, 9.4 assists, and 7.3 rebounds versus Los Angeles.

Even though many of the Lakers backcourt regulars are listed as probable for Wednesday, those guards come in nursing various ailments. Westbrook doesn’t shy away from attacking weakness and will go after any lame defender.

He totaled 32 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists against L.A. back in February — just missing the triple-double — and enters this game averaging 21.7 points, 11.9 assists and 13.1 rebounds in April. He’s -185 to record a triple-double but just -111 to go over 47.5 points + rebounds + assists Wednesday.

PREDICTION: Russell Westbrook points + rebounds + assists Over 47.5 (-111)
