Moneyline pick

Deploying a pair of different backup goalies, the Leafs shutout the Oilers in consecutive games in Edmonton to extend their commanding lead in the North Division. Toronto won 4-0 and followed it up with a 3-0 victory without NHL goal-scoring leader Auston Matthews and starting goalie Frederik Andersen.

Toronto has firmly established itself as the best Canadian team and holds the biggest division lead in the NHL, but any club that features MVP favorite Connor McDavid and last year’s Hart Trophy winner in Leon Draisaitl can do damage on any given night.

Taking three straight in Edmonton is a tough ask, even for a Leafs team that has the fewest regulation losses in the league and a power-play unit that’s as good as it gets.

The Oilers’ offense will wake up eventually…and we’re betting that it happens tonight.

PREDICTION: Oilers (-105)

Over/Under pick

The Under has cashed in three straight Oilers games – thanks to getting held off the scoresheet twice versus Toronto and recording a shutout of their own against the Canucks – while the Leafs are on a run of four straight Unders.

Edmonton is 11-12 O/U on the season, while Toronto is 9-13. Only 10 teams in the NHL have cashed more Overs than Unders, and it’s easy to see why that’s the case for the Leafs and Oilers as bookmakers are consistently setting high totals whenever they take the ice. The 6.5 total is the highest of the six games tonight and has essentially been established as an automatic number for either team regardless of opponent. For a Toronto club that allows the fourth-fewest goals per game at 2.39, that’s simply a hard number to get past on a regular basis, even with an offense that scores at such a high clip.

Toronto and Edmonton are two of the Top-5 teams in the NHL in goals per game and rank 1-2 in total goals scored. Quieting McDavid and Draisaitl in two consecutive contests is no easy feat, and doing it without your No. 1 goalie is just downright shocking. It marked the first time this season that McDavid has failed to record a point in back-to-back games and the second for Draisaitl. We’re not banking on the Leafs to contain the NHL’s top two points leaders again, whether Andersen is back in nets or if Toronto turns to third-stringer Michael Hutchison again.

Even if Matthews is forced to miss his third consecutive game, don’t assume the Under trend will continue. Throw it all out the window, back the big goal-scoring game we’ve been waiting for out of this head-to-head matchup, and take the Over.

PREDICTION: Over 6.5 (-105)
