The No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide didn’t exactly roll into the Round of 32 by any means, but they did advance to set up a date with the No. 10 Maryland Terrapins on Monday.

The Crimson Tide were caught in a back-and-forth battle with No. 15 Iona for about 30 minutes before pulling away to win – but didn’t cover the -16.5 in their NCAA Tournament opener. The Terrapins held off a late surge from No. 7 UConn to win their Round of 64 matchup, covering as 3.5-point underdogs Saturday.

These are our free March Madness picks and predictions for Maryland vs. Alabama on March 22.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

We have a contrast in tempo when the Terps and Tide collide in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland enters 317th in tempo at KenPom.com, burning up 18.3 seconds per possession. Alabama, on the other hand, boasts a breakneck pace (ninth) and fires up a shot 14.1 seconds into its offensive sets.

The Crimson Tide did have trouble finding their offensive groove versus the Gaels but looked much more like themselves in the second half of Saturday’s 68-55 win. Alabama went 13 of 24 from the floor and knocked down 3 of 6 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes, finishing the game with a season-low 16 shots from distance.

Alabama averages more than 30 3-point attempts per contest (making 10.7 of those) on the year and will build on that stronger second-half effort when imposing their pace on Maryland in the Round of 32.

The Terrapins didn’t see anything like this Bama pace during Big Ten play and while Maryland usually does a great job shutting down its opponents’ top threats, the Terps will have to pick their poison when it comes to an Alabama attack featuring seven players averaging seven points or more on the season.

Alabama enters with fresher legs as well, getting solid minutes and production off its bench in the Round of 64 (23 points off the bench). Maryland, on the other hand, is coming off a very physical matchup with the Huskies in which all five starters played 33 minutes or more and received just one sad-ass point off the pine.

PREDICTION: Alabama -5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

You don’t think Alabama will have another night like Saturday from beyond the arc, right?

The Crimson Tide attempted only 16 3-point looks and connected on just five of those shots from deep versus Iona. Some of that was nerves (as the Tide settled down in the second half) and some was due to the Gaels’ energy on defense. But it’s easy to see a more productive effort from beyond the arc on Monday.

Alabama’s transition offense will be a tough pill for Maryland to swallow and will likely be contagious, as the Terps started out running-and-gunning with UConn on Saturday night. For the game, Maryland knocked down 9 of 18 shots from outside and drops an average of almost eight triples per game on solid 35.7 percent shooting.

This 137-point total on the March Madness odds board is the lowest Over/Under number the Tide have tackled all season and is a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to their poor offensive showing (mainly in the first half) versus Iona. Maryland is an Under wonder (12-16-1 O/U) but the last time it took on an offense anywhere near this good, it gave up 79 points to Michigan. And Michigan ain’t no Bama.

PREDICTION: Over 137 (-110)

First half pick

We took Maryland to top its first-half team total in the Round of 64 and it did, continuing a trend of hot starts for the Terrapins.

Maryland scored 33 points in the opening 20 minutes versus Connecticut (going Over the 30-point 1H O/U) and hung tallies of 38, 34, and 33 first-half points in their three games prior.

Alabama allowed 32 points to Iona in the opening frame of Saturday’s contest, following scores of 37 and 40 points allowed in the first 20 minutes versus LSU and Tennessee in the SEC Tournament. On the season, Nate Oats team averages 33 first-half points against per game.

PREDICTION: Maryland first-half team total Over 30.5 (-108)
