Miami Hurricanes Game Notes
Miami redshirt senior QB D’Eriq King completed 31-of-41 passes for 430 yards and five touchdowns while rushing 15 times for 105 yards in Friday’s 44-41 win over North Carolina State. The Hurricanes nearly let themselves get upset in this one. Entering the fourth quarter, Miami was down 31-38. After two consecutive field goals followed by a touchdown drive, Miami pulled ahead with just a few minutes left for North Carolina State to match. King’s efforts were instrumental in leading the comeback, and he did so in a number of ways. On the second field goal drive, King dashed all around the North Carolina State defense, earning on huge 28-yard rush that opened things up. On the following touchdown drive, he found two 30-plus yard completions, including the go-ahead 54-yarder to Mike Harley. Miami squeeze by to 6-1 with Virginia Tech on schedule for next week.
Virginia Tech Hokies Game Notes
Virginia Tech redshirt junior QB Hendon Hooker completed 20-of-27 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing 20 times for 156 yards in a 38-35 loss to Liberty on Saturday. Since recovering from an undisclosed early season injury, Hooker (6’4/220) has been nearly flawless executing HC Justin Fuente’s offense. His prowess in utilizing run-pass option plays had Liberty on their heels all game, as all four of his red zone touchdowns came as a result of his correct RPO reads. Virginia Tech appeared to have won the game on a last second field goal block and subsequent return for a touchdown. However HC Fuente called a timeout right before the ball was snapped, nullifying the play and giving Liberty another chance at a 51-yard game winning field goal, which they converted for the win. Virginia Tech carries a 4-3 record into next Saturday’s game against ACC rival Miami.
