MLB Buy Or Sell? 5 Hot Starts To Watch

Updated: April 11, 2017

The 2017 season is only 1 week old but it’s never too early to look ahead.

I take a look at 5 hot starts around MLB to see if I’m buying or selling stock in these early season trends.

1.The Diamondbacks will have the best offense in the NL

Sports Rumble- MLB Arizona Diamonbacks

Arizona came out of the gate raking, averaging 7 runs a game through the first week. They rode that hot offensive start to a 6-1 record, taking 3 of 4 from the Giants and sweeping the Indians. Paul Goldschmidt slashed .346/.452/.692 to lead the charge for a Diamondback lineup that is very good top to bottom. Jake Lamb, Yasmany Tomas and David Peralta are all proven big league hitters and Brandon Drury looks like he can provide the offense at the bottom of the order. The health of Center Fielder AJ Pollock will be key for Arizona’s offense. If he can stay healthy and keep providing a spark at the top of the lineup, this pace is sustainable.

2.The Twins will make the playoffs

Sports Rumble| MLB-Minnesota Twins

Minnesota opened up with a sweep of the Royals at home then took 2 of 3 on the road against the White Sox. Many (including me) thought they would be among the worst teams in all of baseball this year. We know they are not going to take the AL Central title from the Indians, but can they earn a Wild Card spot? It’s possible, but not likely. The Twins currently own the best team ERA in all of baseball with 34 year old Ervin Santana looking like Cy Young and Brandon Kintzler looking like Mo Rivera. These pitching numbers seem more like the product of a small sample size than a season long trend. A bigger issue for the Twins may be top prospect Byron Buxton looking absolutely lost at the plate so far. He’s 2-26 with 14 K’s and 1BB. Ouch.

3. Noah Syndergaard will win the NL Cy Young

Sports Rumble| MLB-Ny Mets

Thor has looked so dominant in his first 2 starts of 2017 that I though about titling this ‘Noah Syndergaard will be the next Pedro’. I decided to tone it down a bit, but Syndergaard does seems to have a certain swagger to him that stands out. He’s struck out 16 in 13 innings while giving up just a single earned run. He’s been lighting up the radar gun, getting his fastball consistently up to 98mph. Syndergaard will have some stiff competition for the award (Clayton Kershaw, Jake Arrieta, Madison Bumgarner, Carlos Martinez), but nobody has looked as good as he has thus far.

4. Yasiel Puig will hit 30+ Home Runs

Sports Rumble| MLB-LA Dodgers

The tumultuous Dodgers outfielder looks like he may have found his swing again. Puig was a can’t miss superstar his first two years in the big leagues, but maturity issues have held him back. He was almost shipped out of LA last year and even got demoted to the minors for awhile. Through the first week of 2017, Yasiel has taken a different approach to the plate which has led to both more power (3HR in 24AB) and more walks (5). Puig was quoted as saying he is trying to ‘get the ball in the air’. If he sticks with this approach and can keep his head on straight, Puig can be mash with the best of them all year.

5. The Angels have surrounded Mike Trout with enough help to make the playoffs

 Sports Rumble| MLB-LA Angels

The LA Angels are fresh off an incredible 7 run 9th inning comeback win and have started out the 2017 campaign with a 5-2 record. Mike Trout is the best player in the world we all know that, but the question for the past couple of years has been do they have enough around him to compete? Andrelton Simmons is the best defensive shortstop in the game and has looked like he can hit over .300, a huge plus considering how good he is with the glove. Simmons, Yunel Escobar (.414/.452/.586) and Kole Calhoun (.346/.433/.500) all have gotten off to hot starts, but i question whether they can protect Trout all season long.
