The new-look Phoenix Suns are aiming to get where the Denver Nuggets were a season ago – the Western Conference Finals, so Friday’s matchup in the desert should be a good one.

The Suns are 8-6 with a much-improved defense, thanks to Chris Paul quarterbacking the squad, while the Nuggets have gotten off to an inconsistent start at 7-7, despite Nikola Jokic’s brilliance.

With Phoenix laying two points at home, here are our favorite NBA free picks and predictions for Nuggets vs. Suns on Friday, Jan. 22, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Against the Spread (ATS) Pick

The Nuggets have traded wins and losses over the last four games and are coming off a 119-101 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, where Jokic put on another strong performance, dropping 27 points to go along with 12 boards and six assists. The Joker is averaging 25.1 points, 11.4 rebounds and 10 assists for the season, so he will be a tough task even for a solid defensive team like the Suns.

The Suns are coming off a 109-103 win over the Houston Rockets and have come a long way over the last few seasons, now ranking 11th in defensive efficiency, 10th in defensive rating and fifth in scoring defense, allowing just 106.5 points per game. While on offense, the inside-outside game of Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton has made the Suns a dangerous team on most nights. And those two should have some room to work against a suspect Nuggets defense.

Denver ranks 23rd in both defensive efficiency and defensive rating, and allows the 27th-worst opponent field goal percentage. Mix in that the Nuggets could once again be without Michael Porter Jr., and are 0-5-1 ATS in their last six games as underdogs, and we like the Suns to get the job done on their home court.

PREDICTION: Suns -2 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

Phoenix boasts an improving defense, but the Nuggets will still provide a difficult assignment. The pick-and-roll game of Jokic and guard Jamal Murray is hard for anyone to contain, and while the Suns play solid defense, they rank just 18th in opponent field goal percentage, so both of the Nuggets’ stars should get some good looks in this one. Additionally, Denver averages 115.6 points per game and has scored fewer than 114 points just once in its last nine games.

While the Suns’ offense is a little more inconsistent, they should have a chance to exceed their season average of 109.8 points per game against a shaky Nuggets’ defense which we have highlighted, making this number low enough for us to like the Over.

PREDICTION: Over 220 (-110)

Player Prop

Another reason for the Suns’ breakout this season has been the development of wing Mikal Bridges. The former Villanova star is averaging 14.7 points on 51.7 percent shooting, is pulling down 5.5 boards per game, and has been a beast on the defensive end of the floor. That means we love Bridges’ rebounding total of 4.5 in this one.

Ayton and Jokic should be battling down low for most of the game, and that should create some more opportunities for Bridges against a Nuggets team that ranks 10th in field goal attempts per game and is coming off a game where they put up 105 shots against the Thunder.

PREDICTION: Mikal Bridges Over 4.5 Rebounds (+100)

Nuggets vs Suns Betting Card

  • Suns -2 (-110)
  • Over 220 (-110)
  • Mikal Bridges Over 4.5 Rebounds (+100)
