Against the spread (ATS) pick

Oregon State lost both matchups with Colorado this season, most recently a 61-57 defeat in Corvallis on February 20 in which the Beavers battled back from a 10-point hole to cover as 6.5-point home dogs. That loss was one of only two defeats handed to OSU in the past eight games and Oregon State avenged the other blemish (80-67 loss to Oregon) by stunning the Ducks in the semifinals Friday night.

The Beavers did a great job on defense disrupting one of the top efficient attacks in college basketball, most notably getting their heels above the 3-point line and quickly closing out on the Ducks’ shooters. Oregon made just 6 of its 25 attempts from distance and couldn’t dig itself out of an early hole.

When Oregon missed, OSU was quick to clean the glass. The Beavers’ big lineup – ranked 23rd in size and 41st in effective height (+1.2) – outrebound the Ducks 37-23 including 11 offensive boards. Colorado is a sound rebounding team (76.9 percent defensive rebound rate) but was pushed around on the glass when they last played Oregon State, giving up 12 offensive rebounds.

Colorado is the better team on paper but has a bad habit of letting foes back into games. The Buffaloes came out swinging versus Southern Cal, holding a 15-point lead in the first half, but watching that fall apart midway through the second frame. The Buffaloes botched a 13-point cushion versus Cal in the quarterfinals and let a 10-point lead melt away when they faced Oregon State on February 20.

With the way the Beavers are battling and the Buffs’ tendency to leave the backdoor open, we’re grabbing the points with an Oregon State program playing its best basketball of the season.

PREDICTION: Oregon State +8.5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

Oregon State saw a lapse in 3-point defense toward the end of the regular season but has stiffened up on the perimeter and is being very stingy about the open looks from outside. On the year, OSU limited foes to just 31.2 percent success from deep (54th) and held opponents to just 6.3 triples per contest.

If Colorado is going to score, it’s going to have to venture inside the paint and play into the very physical and plodding style of the Beavers. Oregon State’s pace of play wants to draw out possessions and bring the game to a grinding halt, averaging 18.8 seconds per possession (315th) and boasting a tempo rating of 65.6 at KenPom.com – the 40th-slowest offense in the country.

The Buffaloes defense is fine with that, forcing opponents to chew through an average of 18.6 seconds per offensive touch and ranking just outside of the Top 25 in adjusted defensive efficiency (26th – 91.4). The 70 points on 52 percent shooting allowed to USC was the highest point total Colorado has given up in the past seven games, with the Buffs clamping down for an average of only 61 points against in that span – playing below the total in five of those games.

These Pac-12 teams played Under totals of 137 and 138 points in their two regular-season meetings and are 2-6 Over/Under in their last eight head-to-head meetings overall.

PREDICTION: Under 133.5 (-110)
