The U.S. Open is through to the weekend and Russell Henley sits tied with Richard Bland atop the leaderboard.

Richard…who?

We were asking the same question most of yesterday. Bland, a 48-year-old Englishman who was ranked as low as 218th in the world earlier in the year, has been the talk of the tournament and sits at +2,800 on the U.S. Open odds board.

It has been a great story so far but we’re shying away from making a wager on him, focusing instead on the guy he’s tied with at -5 and a South African who sits just one stroke back.

Here are our best bets for Round 3 of the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

US Open Round 3 outright picks

Russel Henley Outright (+1,100)

Recent form? Course history? Who needs ’em? Henley came into the week having struggled in both areas but has put together a marvelous 36-hole performance to earn a share of the second-round lead. He has been one of the steadiest golfers in the field, having carded just three bogeys in his first two rounds. And while he might not have a strong track record here, his iron game is one of the best in the world – so don’t be surprised to see him extend his stay atop the leaderboard this weekend.

Louis Oosthuizen End of Round 3 Leader (+400)

Here’s another guy who has done well to avoid trouble spots through his first two rounds, with Oosthuizen recording just three bogeys against seven birdies so far. And unlike Henley, his recent form is terrific, highlighted by a T2 at the PGA Championship last month. He has the green prowess (No. 1 in SG: Putting) to put the heat on the competition over the final two rounds – and is a good option to hold at least a share of the third-round lead given the way his game has come together the past month or so.

US Open Round 3 matchup picks

Christian Bezuidenhout Over Bryson DeChambeau (+162)

These two head into Round 3 at even par through 36 holes and the way DeChambeau rebounded from a ho-hum opening-round 73 will have plenty of people loading up on his weekend props. But he has struggled on Saturdays (88th in scoring average), and his round-to-round volatility, in general, makes him hard to trust. Bezuidenhout is a prime candidate to implode given his struggles with the driver and irons at times this season,  but at this price, it’s worth banking on him holding it together for 18 more holes.

Lee Westwood Round 3 Over 73 (-143)

Three birdies, four bogeys, 29 pars. That’s what Westwood’s card looks like through 36 holes – but things are about to get a lot more interesting, and not in a good way. With pin placements guaranteed to be more challenging than in Rounds 1 and 2 and winds expected to get a bit gustier as the day goes on, scoring should rise measurably. And that’s not good news for Westwood, who ranks 169th in Round 3 scoring this year and has rounds of 75-70-75 over his last three Saturdays on tour.
