Penguins shut out by Sharks

Pittsburgh was shut out at home Thursday night in a 4-0 defeat versus San Jose to fall to 32-22-7 on the season. The Sharks scored three times in the first period and added a goal in the third to skate to the rout. Casey DeSmith surrendered four goals on 33 shots in the losing effort. The Penguins registered 26 shots on goal with Kris Letang leading the way with six shots.

Flyers struggle at Canadiens

Philadelphia fell by a count of 5-1 Thursday night at Montreal as its record on the season dropped to 28-26-7. The Canadiens scored three goals in the first period and two more in the second to take a commanding 5-1 advantage through 40 minutes. Michael Raffl scored the lone goal for the Flyers with 9:37 remaining on assists from Shayne Gostisbehere and Travis Konecny. Carter Hart started and allowed three goals on nine shots before being replaced for a second straight game with that stat line. Brian Elliott played the rest of the contest, giving up two more goals on 31 shots.

NHL Betting Trends

Pittsburgh

The Penguins are 8-2 in their last 10 games versus the Metropolitan Division. Pittsburgh is 4-1 in its last five games as a favorite.

Philadelphia

The Flyers are 4-0 in their last four Saturday games. Philadelphia is 12-4 in its last 16 games overall.

Prediction:

With Hart struggling lately, Elliott will get the nod in net today for the Flyers. I’m inclined to trust him more currently, although Hart was having an outstanding last couple months before the recent stumbles. The Flyers have had their fare share of poor performances against the Penguins the last few years, but in a nationally televised setting in their home city I expect an elite performance tonight. Philadelphia isn’t far removed from playing dominant hockey and it faces a Pittsburgh squad that has been up-and-down all season. I’m taking a shot on the Flyers tonight.
