Starting pitchers

Jeff Hoffman (2-1, 2.66 ERA): Hoffman has looked solid in his first season in Cincy. He allowed two runs (one earned) in five innings against the Diamondbacks in his previous start last Thursday. The 28-year-old must be thanking his lucky stars to get away from Colorado where he pitched to a 6.40 ERA with a 1.62 WHIP in 230 2-3 career innings with the Rockies.

Walker Buehler (1-0, 2.16 ERA): The 2019 All-Star is in fine form and is coming off a game against the Padres where he allowed two runs while striking out nine batters across seven innings. The 26-year-old has been a model of consistency so far this season, logging at least six innings in each of his four starts while allowing two or fewer runs in each contest.

Runline pick

The Dodgers are coming off their second straight extra-innings loss and are now 2-6 in their last eight games. But don’t hit the panic button because the defending World Series champs are still tied for the best record in the majors and will have a big pitching advantage tonight.

Walker Buehler has been one of the game’s best pitchers since making the Dodgers rotation in 2018, going 24-8 with a 2.86 ERA and a WHIP of 0.98 in 65 career starts. He’s been even better at home and is off to another strong start in 2021.

Although Jeff Hoffman has looked sharp for the Reds so far this year, his 1.33 WHIP is a bit concerning. While you might want to excuse his poor performances over the last few years because he was pitching for the Rockies, he also struggled away from Coors Field, pitching to a 6.32 ERA with a 1.59 WHIP in 37 innings on the road over the last two years.

The Dodgers are averaging the most runners left on base in scoring position with 4.57 per game. But with how talented and productive their hitters are, ranking fourth in the majors with an OPS of .761, it’s just a matter of time before they cash those runs in.

Meanwhile, the Reds are second in the majors with an OPS of .768 but have struggled on the road with a mark of just .590.

Sometimes MLB betting is all about being consistent and even with the Dodgers’ recent skid, they are 91-36 in their last 127 home games. Take the Dodgers on the runline.

PREDICTION: Dodgers -1.5 (-110)

Over/Under pick

We mentioned Buehler’s terrific career stats and he’s been even more dominant at home, where he has pitched to a 2.39 ERA and 0.86 WHIP through 203 innings in 36 games. He has also been an Under machine, with the Dodgers going below the total in eight of his last 10 starts going back to last season.

The Reds are leading the majors with 5.55 runs per game but that number is heavily inflated by their first week of the season. Cincinnati is plating just 3.93 runs per game over the last 15 contests.

Both teams have actually struggled at the plate recently, with the Dodgers and Reds tying for 15th in the majors with an OPS of .692 over the last 15 days.

With the Dodgers going 10-4 to the Under in their last 14 games against teams with a losing record, take the Under again.

PREDICTION: Under 7.5 (-110)
