South Carolina vs Ole Miss Odds, Picks and Predictions for SEC Tournament March 11

Updated: March 10, 2021

Ole Miss is inconsistent offensively but it has a strong defense, which should be enough for the Rebels to get past South Carolina in their SEC Tournament Round 2 matchup on Thursday.

The Ole Miss Rebels enter the SEC tournament on the NCAA Tournament bubble and if they don’t want that bubble to burst, they’ll need to record a couple of quality wins over the next few days.

That quest for quality wins begins with a Second Round matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks, who managed just four conference wins this season. And what better way to impress the selection committee than by covering a 7-point college basketball betting spread.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

What makes Ole Miss a bubble team – and not a lock for the Big Dance – is that it seems the Rebels just can’t get out of their own way.

Ole Miss won seven of its last nine games down the stretch, but those two losses came against Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. Additionally, the Rebels are lacking a real signature win on the season. But that inconsistency is what can happen when a team isn’t a great shooting one like Ole Miss.

The Rebels rank 116th in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency, scoring 68.7 points per game, but with the defense that they employ that should be good enough to get past South Carolina.

The Gamecocks went 4-12 in SEC play this season and have lost eight of their last nine overall. South Carolina ranks 136th in adjusted offensive efficiency and was one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the country. That doesn’t bode well against an Ole Miss squad that ranks 20th in adjusted defensive efficiency and allows just 63.1 points per game.

In their lone previous meeting, Ole Miss defeated South Carolina 81-74 as 1-point road underdogs back on Feb. 13, behind a combined 45 points from Devontae Shuler and Romello White.

The Rebels won’t be underdogs this time around and should be able to smother the Gamecocks’ sub-par offense, riding Shuler and White to a relatively easy win and cover in this matchup.

PREDICTION: Ole Miss -7 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

The last time these two teams met the total closed at 137.5, a number they easily eclipsed by 17.5 points. This time around the number is on the board at 141 and it wouldn’t be surprising to see a bit of a different result in this one.

As noted, Ole Miss’s offense can seemingly come and go at the drop of a hat. In fact, the Rebels are putting up an average of just 62.4 points over their last five games. And while the Gamecocks average 73.2 points per game this season, they have struggled against better defensive teams. Excluding the Gamecocks’ weird 91-point outburst against Georgia, they have averaged 68.4 points in their last eight losses.

Mix the current total with those two inconsistent offenses, and a great defense, and we like this one to slip below the number.

PREDICTION: Under 141 (-110)
