It’s a battle of ACC contenders both looking to improve their respective resumes as March approaches when the Louisville Cardinals host the Syracuse Orange.

The Cardinals will be playing their first game since February 1 due to COVID-19 postponements, but are still college basketball betting favorites, laying four points against a Syracuse team that has won three of its last four games.

Does that rust mean we should fade the favored Cardinals? Find out in our best free Syracuse vs Louisville picks and predictions for Wednesday, February 17, with tipoff at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

Louisville hasn’t played a game in over two and a half weeks, so it’s fair to wonder if the rust will hold them back in this matchup. But luckily, the Cards hang their hats on defense, and effort isn’t usually affected by rust.

The Cardinals rank 30th in the country adjusted defensive efficiency according to the KenPom ratings, and only Virginia ranks higher in the ACC. They also hold opponents to a conference-low 40.1 percent shooting from the floor and should have a massive edge on the boards. Those numbers should play well against an inconsistent-shooting Syracuse team that doesn’t travel well.

Syracuse has won three of its last four games to climb into seventh spot in the ACC, but those three wins came against Boston College and North Carolina State, who have a combined five conference wins. Additionally, the Orange are just 2-5 SU and ATS away from the Carrier Dome this season, shooting just 43 percent from the field in those games.

Yes, Louisville might be a little rusty to start, and could have trouble finding rhythm from deep against the famous Orange zone defense. But the Cards should clean up the glass in this one creating some second-chance opportunities. Syracuse is also just 3-8 ATS in its last 11 overall, while Louisville has won 16 of its last 17 at home SU and are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 at home against teams with losing road records.

PREDICTION: Louisville -4 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

The total for this ACC matchup hit the board at around 140 and there hasn’t been much movement since, but the number may be a touch too low.

Louisville’s defense is one of the best in the ACC, allowing just 64.2 points per game, but Syracuse’s balanced scoring could pose a problem. They are the second-highest scoring team in the conference, putting up 76.6 points per contest with five players averaging over 10 points per game.

But all that offense has cost the Orange something on the defensive end as they are allowing 70.4 points per game. While Louisville might be a little rusty early, they have some capable 3-point shooters to take advantage of the Syracuse zone. This one could fly Over this number.

PREDICTION: Over 140.5 (-110)
