Every time the Denver Nuggets look like they’re turning a corner, they stumble—and in a shorter-than-normal schedule that’s a major concern.

The Nuggets carry a sub-.500 record into Tuesday’s showdown with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and while NBA betting odds have Denver favored by nearly double digits in the first meeting of the season between the teams, you can’t help but wonder if the Thunder represent the safer play.

Denver has been one of the worst ATS teams in the NBA through its first 13 games, while Oklahoma City has been a pleasant surprise, particularly on the road.

These are our favorite NBA free picks and predictions for Thunder vs. Nuggets on Tuesday, Jan. 19, with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. ET.

The line opened at Denver -9.5, with the total at 219.5. Early action hasn’t swayed the spread in either direction but bettors are hitting the Over, as the total has shifted up to 220.5. Check back later for a full report from Patrick!

Against the Spread (ATS) Pick

The Nuggets have been a colossal disappointment in 2020-21 after rolling to a 46-27 SU record last season. Despite boasting one of the most electrifying guards and elite big men in the league, Denver hasn’t won more than two straight games all season and is just 4-9 ATS—including a stretch of four non-covers in their previous five games at Ball Arena (formerly Pepsi Center).

The Thunder, meanwhile, have won four of six and bounced back nicely from a lopsided loss to the Lakers, toppling Chicago 127-125 behind 33 points from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Oklahoma City is 5-1 SU and ATS away from Chesapeake Energy Center this season, which should further boost its stock among the betting public heading into Tuesday’s game.

Denver – which has one of the most tangible home-court advantages in the league – has a collective plus-1 point margin in its first eight home games. That’s bad…and isn’t a trend we expect the Nuggets to halt here.

PREDICTION: Oklahoma City +9.5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

Nuggets games have been incredibly high-scoring affairs, due to a combination of an impressive and balanced offensive attack…and truly dismal defensive showings. Denver averages nearly 228 total points per game so far, and with this game total hovering in the 220 range, you’re going to see a lot of action on the Over from the casual betting crowd (surprise, surprise!)

The Thunder have been a tougher team to read from a totals perspective: they’re 6-6 O/U for the season and are just 2-4 O/U in six road games. Yet, while they rank second-last in offensive efficiency for the season, that rating should rise after this one—and with both teams ranking below average in defensive efficiency, this has the makings of a shootout.

PREDICTION: Over 220.5 (-110)

Player Prop Pick

Sportsbooks can occasionally be slow to the draw when it comes to adjusting player props—and that is music to bettor’s ears. We have a great example of this Tuesday, with Gilgeous-Alexander in a prime position to follow up his impressive showing against the Bulls last time out.

SGA has scored 20+ points in five of his past six games and is averaging 22.6 points per game in January. Not only is his point prop low given these recent trends, but the Over is priced far more generously than the Under. We’ll happily take the higher payout.

PREDICTION: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Over 20.5 Points (+100)

Thunder vs Nuggets Betting Card

  • Oklahoma City +9.5 (-110)
  • Over 220.5 (-110)
  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Over 20.5 Points (+100)
