Against the spread (ATS) pick

By now, we all know the story of the Trail Blazers: They’ve been crushed by injuries, yet again, but have refused to roll over in the difficult Western Conference. In fact, they are excelling, having won seven of their last eight games to prop them up to fourth in the West standings.

Damian Lillard is punishing teams on a nightly basis, helping Portland go 5-0 ATS over the winning streak, while Carmelo Anthony – if you glance past his shooting percentage – is helping carry the load and Gary Trent Jr. is a machine from long range. The Blazers are a Top-5 team in offensive efficiency…and just wait until they get All-Star C.J. McCollum back.

Portland is playing for the second time in as many nights, but so are the Pelicans, which got a much-needed win to snap a three-game skid. Their 31-point victory came after losses to the Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, and Chicago Bulls. Before that, they had won four straight. This is sort of who they are. New Orleans is an unpredictable team for bettors (outside of the Over, but more on that later) that can’t play defense but has no problem engaging in shootouts, led by Zion Williamson’s nearly 25 points per game.

The Pelicans are 12-15 ATS this season and can’t be recommended as a 3-point favorite against a hot Portland team.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers +3 (-110)

Over/Under pick

If you want defense, you came to the wrong place. If you’re looking for offense, tune in to tonight’s Blazers-Pels game. These two rank Bottom 4 in the NBA in defensive efficiency, both allowing more than 114 ppg. On the flip side, they are both two of the better offensive teams and routinely engage in high-scoring affairs.

We’ve talked many times about the Brooklyn Nets being a near-automatic Over—but the Pelicans are right there with them. New Orleans is 19-8 O/U this season, after going Under in each of its first five games. The Pels have gone Over in each of their last six games and 14 of their past 16 contests overall. Portland isn’t as guaranteed, but the Blazers are 15-12 O/U on the season and 7-3 over the last 10.

With both on a back-to-back, we wouldn’t expect them to suddenly start playing defense tonight. Get ready for the 3-point happy Blazers to jack them up all night from long range (they are second in the NBA at 42.0 attempts per contest and New Orleans surrenders more shots from deep than any team) in a game that should leave a lot to be desired on the defensive end, which is great for Over bettors.

PREDICTION: Over 236.5 (-110)

Player prop pick

This is a perfect spot for Trent Jr. to continue lighting it up from deep. A vital piece of the Blazers’ offensive attack, Trent Jr. ranks 14th in the NBA in 3-point percentage (44.4 percent) and 14th in 3-pointers made per game at 3.2.

In nine February games, he’s slightly increased those terrific numbers, nailing 3.8 a game on 45.3 percent shooting from deep. He’s averaging over eight 3-point attempts per outing this month, while scoring 19-plus points nightly.

The 22-year-old has an O/U 3-point prop of 3.5 tonight. He’s hit that number in four of his last eight games, and in the ones he didn’t, he connected on three triples each contest. Against a Pels team that takes many nights off on the defensive end, he should have no problem doing serious damage.

PREDICTION: Trent Jr. Over 3.5 Made 3-pointers (-120)
