Capitals shut out in Game 3

Washington lost by a count of 5-0 Monday night in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals at Carolina. The Hurricanes took a 1-0 advantage through one period and then scored twice each in the second and third periods to roll to the victory. Goaltender Braden Holtby surrendered five goals on 45 shots in the losing effort. The Capitals registered only 18 shots on goal with Alex Ovechkin leading the way as he accounted for five of them.

Foegele, Hamilton highlight win

Carolina dominated to the tune of 5-0 Monday night over visting Washington to draw within 2-1 in the best-of-7 series. Warren Foegele put the Hurricanes on the board midway through the first period on a goal assisted by Justin Faulk and Brock McGinn. Foegele added his second goal with 13:51 on the clock in the second period as Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen drew assists. Dougie Hamilton scored on the power play later in the second on assists by Jordan Staal and Jacob Slavin to make it 3-0. With 10:13 left in the third period, Hamilton scored on the power play again off assists from Slavin and Foegele. NHL Betting Trends

Washington

The Capitals are 10-1 in their last 11 Thursday games. Washington is 5-1 in its last six meetings in Carolina.

Carolina

The Hurricanes are 5-1 in their last six home games. Carolina is 7-19 in the last 26 meetings.

Prediction:

Washington played like junk in Game 3, not generating much offense and letting the Hurricanes have their way. The most fight it showed came in unfortunate circumstances as Ovechkin pummeled 19-year-old Andrei Svechnikov quickly in a fight, leading to the latter’s entering of the concussion protocol and doubtful status for tonight’s contest. I think the Capitals rebound strongly tonight with a much better all-around performance. Carolina is still very untested in big games and that will likely show tonight. Go with the Caps.
