MLB Playoff Predictions: Will Brewers make postseason in 2018? 3/7/18

After nearly qualifying for the postseason a year ago, will the re-tooled Milwaukee Brewers make a playoff run this season?

According to oddsmakers from online sports book YouWager, the Brewers are 3/2 to make the playoffs in 2018 and have odds of 20/37 to miss the postseason field for the seventh consecutive year. Milwaukee nearly made the playoffs a year ago when the club finished with an 86-76 record, which left the Brewers just outside of the wild card.

The Brewers had one of the busiest offseasons in baseball. In the span of less than 24 hours, the team came to a deal with free agent centerfielder Lorenzo Cain of the Royals, then swung a deal for outfielder Christian Yelich of the Marlins. Milwaukee parted with outfielder Lewis Brinson, infielder Isan Diaz, outfielder Monte Harrison and right-hander Jordan Yamamoto in the Yelich trade, but the move bolstered their outfield.

The biggest question remaining is their rotation. The Brewers finished fifth in the National League in rotation ERA last year, which was respectable. But Chase Anderson and Zach Davies are regression candidates and they failed to make a significant addition to help the rotation this offseason. (Although they did add Jhoulys Chacin, Yovani Gallardo and Wade Miley has fillers.)

2018 MLB Postseason Prediction: I think this club offers bettors value. The Brewers were a year ahead of schedule last season when they won 86 games and they’ve improved on paper. Here’s the difference for me: I expect them to make a deadline move for a starting pitcher. Or, perhaps they’ll be the team that strikes a deal with one of the free-agent pitchers that remain unsigned as of this date. Either Jake Arrietta or Lance Lynn would provide an upgrade for the Brewers’ starting rotation. The outfield is one of the best in baseball and assuming guys like Eric Thames don’t take too big of a step backwards, Milwaukee will be in the wild card hunt.

Brewers’ 2018 Postseason Prediction: Yes 3/2
