Favorites to win NBA Finals MVP: Beasts of the East lead the way

The Brooklyn Nets are the favorites to win the NBA Finals, so it’s no surprise that all three of the Nets’ superstars are available at better than 14/1 odds. But leading the way is Kevin Durant (+410), an 11-time All-Star who averaged 26.9 points per game in just 35 games for Brooklyn and already has two NBA Finals MVPs on his resume.

Athletic bigs out of the East stay the theme at the top, as both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid are tied for second at +700. Giannis is the reigning two-time regular season MVP but he and the Bucks have constantly fallen flat in the playoffs, although a retooled roster provides hope that 2021 will be different, while Embiid is one of the regular season MVP frontrunners this year — and is also looking to shed the past playoff woes for the East No. 1 seed Philadelphia 76ers.

Despite finishing seventh and fourth in the Western Conference this season, both Los Angeles teams are favored to come out of the West. That results in reigning Finals MVP LeBron James (+850) sitting fourth on the odds board, while Clippers star Kawhi Leonard, in search of his third NBA Finals MVP with three different teams, rounds out the Top 5 at +1,000.

The NBA Finals MVP Award has been handed out 31 times and only once has it gone to a player on the losing team (Jerry West in 1969), a rookie (Magic Johnson in 1980) or a bench player (Andre Iguodala in 2015, +25,000 this year).

Understanding NBA Finals MVP odds

Sportsbooks will post NBA Finals MVP odds as early as the beginning of the playoffs. These NBA futures are constantly adjusted throughout the postseason depending on how well players perform as well as their team success. Sportsbooks will also adjust the NBA Awards odds based on handle and liability to certain players.

NBA Finals MVP odds will usually look like this:

This means that on a $100 bet, you’ll stand to win $410 if Durant takes home the NBA Finals MVP Award. If it’s close to the end of the NBA Finals and a player has stood out as the obvious MVP of the series they might have a minus sign (-) ahead of their odds like this:

This means that if you bet on LeBron to win Finals MVP, you would have needed to bet $155 to profit $100.
