Betting trend to know

The Under is 20-6-1 in Rangers’ last 27 games after scoring 2 goals or fewer in their previous contest. Find more NHL betting trends for Capitals vs. Rangers.

Moneyline pick

The Rags are fifth in the East with a 26-20-6 record and while they can technically still make the postseason, they need to win their final four games of the season and the Bruins would have to go pointless in their last six contests.

The Rangers are Top-10 in the league in both goals scored and allowed per game, but despite that impressive goal-differential, will likely be on the outside looking in when the Stanley Cup playoffs roll around.

The culprit? A tough East Division and a very inconsistent Rangers team that is just as capable of scoring eight goals (as it did three times in a 20-day span) as it is of being shutout (as it has been in each of their last two games).

The Rangers and Caps are both coming off back-back losses, and coincidently, both lost their previous games by an identical 3-0 scoreline, the Rangers to the Isles and the Caps to the Penguins. Even with that defeat, Washington has won 23 of its last 33 games and is 5-1 in its previous six contests on the road.

The Capitals are second in the league in scoring with 3.37 goals per game and their special teams have been excellent, with their powerplay and penalty kill ranking in the Top-6. They have also been one of the league’s best teams on the road, going 17-7-2 in away contests.

Although superstars Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson are once again questionable for today after missing the last series against Pittsburgh, the Rags have a few injury concerns of their own, with leading goal-scorer Chris Kreider questionable and two of their top defenseman likely out.

Even with two of the Caps’ best players possibly out and the Rangers’ backs against the wall, we like the more consistent Washington team to prevail at a pick’em price.

PREDICTION: ML Washington (-110)

Over/Under pick

The Over/Under is a tough wager to bet on until the status of Ovechkin and Carlson clears up. But given how poorly both teams have looked on offense lately, the Under should be the call. The Caps have been held to one or fewer goals in three of their last five games, while the Rangers haven’t scored in their last two contests.

Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin has also been sharp, following up on an impressive rookie campaign by going 15-12-3 with a 2.44 GAA and .920 save percentage this year.

The Rangers have gone 5-1 to the Under in their last six games and the Under has also cashed in four of six meetings between these teams this season.

With the Rangers desperate not to lose tonight, look for a tight-checking contest with an added emphasis on defense. Take the Under.

PREDICTION: Under 6 (-110)
