Cirkunov vs Spann betting preview

These two were originally supposed to square off in December before Cirkunov pulled out due to an injury. Cirkunov hasn’t fought since September of 2019, when he earned his first Performance of the Night bonus for submitting Jimmy “The Brute” Crute in the first round.

The 34-year-old is 6-3 since making his UFC debut in 2015, with five of his six wins coming by submission and all three of his losses coming by knockout. The Latvian-Canadian has a background in judo, wrestling and BJJ, and is a grappling specialist with brutal strength and technique on the mat.

Ryan Spann is coming off his own KO loss to Johnny Walker last September. That defeat snapped an eight-fight winning streak, which included four consecutive victories since entering the UFC.

The 29-year-old bounced between the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions earlier in his MMA career but looks much better at 205 pounds with his 6-foot-5-inch frame. Spann is long and athletic with solid kickboxing ability but he’s at his best when grappling, with 11 of his 18 career wins coming by submission.

Cirkunov vs Spann UFC prediction and betting pick

PREDICTION: Cirkunov to win by submission – Cirkunov is the definition of a glass cannon, going 3-3 in his last six fights with each win coming by first-round submission and each defeat coming via first-round KO/TKO.

That said, those knockout losses came against heavy-handed hitters like Walker, Glover Teixeira and Volkan Oezdemir, and Spann has nowhere near their striking skill or power.

Although matchups between two grappling specialists can often end up being stand-up fights, Cirkunov simply has too many holes in his striking to consider that option. And with Spann’s weak takedown defense (he was taken down twice by Devin Clark and four times by Luis Henrique) and Cirkunov averaging a whopping 4.42 takedowns per 15 minutes, the Latvian-Canadian should be able to take this fight to the ground where he can impose his will.

While Spann is a good grappler, Cirkunov is on a whole other level. His last three submission wins came against a BJJ specialist in Crute, a former All-American wrestler in Patrick Cummins, and the current No. 9-ranked light heavyweight in Nikita Krylov—who has 15 career submission wins of his own. Back Cirkunov to win by submission once again.
