Denmark vs Finland predictions

Moneyline pick

Denmark will come into the Euros in great form, having gone without a loss in qualifiers and only recently having a 34-match unbeaten streak ended. As the old adage goes, you’re only as strong as the spine of your team in international tournaments, and in that sense, the Danes are looking awfully strong.

Premier League and FA Cup champion Kasper Schmeichel will remain as Denmark’s No. 1 after another season as one of the best goalies in England. In front of him are AC Milan’s Simon Kjaer, who captains Denmark, and newly crowned Champions League winner Andreas Christensen, who make up the core of a flat back four. Central midfield is an area of particular strength for Denmark, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg of Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Delaney playing behind Christian Eriksen. As is the case at club level, Eriksen is at the heart of everything Denmark does, and the Danes’ talisman is empowered by Hojbjerg and Delaney’s steadying presence in midfield.

Against weaker opposition, Denmark can press high up the pitch, with their fullbacks pushing forward, Eriksen playing between the lines, and a front three flooding central areas while Hojbjerg or Kjaer drops deep between the center-backs. Finland will be well equipped to defend Denmark, tactically speaking, as they play a back five with three center-backs, which should provide ample numbers in the middle of the field. However, with a low block and another bank of four ahead of them, the Fins will do little to disrupt Denmark’s control of the game.

The result in this one will come down to whether or not Denmark can find a way through a resolute Finnish defense. With Eriksen holding the keys and a number of talented attackers in front of him, it will just be a matter of time. Don’t be put off by Denmark’s lack of reputation as a strong international side — they are a legitimate threat to win a game in the knockout stages and will start with a win here.

PREDICTION: Denmark (-225)

Both teams to score – Yes

The longer Finland can hold Denmark out as they defend, the more Denmark will push forward, and you could even see Hojbjerg or Kjaer get on the ball from deep and drive forward, eager to do anything to break two strong lines of defense. With Denmark pressing high and pushing their fullbacks further up the pitch, they’ll become more susceptible to getting hit on the counter and when they do, Finland has just the players to take advantage.

While not the most well-known, Finnish midfielder Glen Kamara is not only his team’s best player but their most in form, after a title-winning campaign with Rangers in Scotland. Kamara is an absolute force as a No. 8, with his combination of athleticism and reliability with the ball making him very threatening when driving forward. Among midfielders playing in Europe, Kamara ranks in the 88th percentile in pass completion and the 82nd percentile in progressive carries (runs of five yards or more with the ball in the attacking part of the pitch), and he will be at the center of any Finland counter.

While it will be Kamara to drive forward with the ball on the break, it will be striker Teemu Pukki getting on the end of Kamara’s ball progression. Pukki is absolutely fantastic making runs off the ball into space, and Finland’s 3-5-2 is crafted with the purpose of giving Pukki a partner to play off of because of that. When Pukki finds space and can receive the ball near goal, he rarely makes a mistake. The Fin has been one of the most clinical finishers in England for three years and scored 10 of Finland’s 16 goals in qualifying.

The Group B opener will be all Denmark, but not without the Danes leaving themselves open to a couple of counter-attacks. It will only take one counter starting with Kamara and ending with Pukki for Finland to get on the board.

PREDICTION: Both teams to score – Yes (+162)
