Starting pitchers

Clayton Kershaw (2-1, 2.89 ERA): After a rocky start to the season, Kershaw has looked like his vintage self over his last two starts. The future Hall of Famer has allowed just one run on nine hits while striking out 14 with no walks over his last 13 innings. When Kershaw is on, he can still be one of the hardest pitchers to hit in baseball.

Yu Darvish (1-0, 3.06 ERA): Similar things can be said about Darvish in his first few starts with the Padres. After a tough Opening Day, Darvish has allowed just one run on three hits in each of his last two starts. If there is a man that can slow down the Dodgers’ dangerous lineup, it’s Darvish and his seemingly limitless array of pitches.

Betting trend to know

The Under is 5-0 in the Dodgers’ last five games vs. a right-handed starter and is 7-0 in the Padres’ last 7 home games. Find more MLB betting trends for Dodgers vs. Padres.

Moneyline pick

We may be only three weeks into this MLB season, but the Dodgers already look like the best team in baseball, and it will be hard for the Padres to knock them off their throne in the National League West. They can hit. They can pitch. They can play defense. But what does that mean for the second game of this series?

Well, the pitching matchup for Game 2 is as good as it gets, as Kershaw toes the rubber against Darvish. As we saw in Game 1, great pitching trumps great hitting, so which starter has the edge in this matchup?

As noted, both Kershaw and Darvish bounced back after a rough Opening Day, but if you have to side with one of these starters at the moment it has to be Darvish. The right-hander is becoming a true artist when it comes to pitching.

Darvish has thrown at least seven different types of pitches this season which really keeps hitters off balance and creates a lot of soft contact.

Kershaw on the other hand is still finding too much of the plate with his fastball at times and if he doesn’t have a feel for his curveball, he has a tendency to give up some home runs. Kershaw made two starts against the Padres last season (one postseason) where he gave up six runs on 11 hits, including three dingers.

Siding with Darvish as an underdog in this one appears to be good value.

PREDICTION: Padres (+115)

Over/Under pick

It should be no surprise to see a total of 7.5 with Kershaw and Darvish on the mound, but is that number low enough to think about the Over?

Well, the Padres were able to win games without Fernando Tatis Jr. thanks to some excellent pitching. The Padres rank in the Top 5 in team ERA, WHIP, opponent batting average, and OPS, and Darvish is a big reason for that. But even when he hands the ball off, it is to arguably the best bullpen in the MLB.

And when it comes to the Padres’ offense, they are hitting for a good average, but are failing to get the clutch hits with any sort of regularity, resulting in them ranking 22nd in scoring, plating just 4.18 runs per game.

While the Dodgers are one of the deepest and most talented lineups in baseball, they will be without Cody Bellinger for this one, and if anyone can shut that offense down, it’s Darvish.

We’re betting this pitcher’s duel stays below the number.

PREDICTION: Under 7.5 (-110)
