England team preview

Navigating the hype that surrounds this English team entering Euro 2020 is one of the biggest challenges for bettors. The coach, talent, continuity, and superstars are all in line — making this team a legitimate favorite to win the event. The home-field advantage is also there. Each of the three group stage matches will be played at Wembley with 25,000 fans in attendance. Should England make a deep run in the tournament, they would also have a home match for both the semifinal and finals. Football could in fact come home…quite literally.

Manager Gareth Southgate has tinkered throughout qualification and Nations League with various quirks in the lineup, but it unlikely we see any surprises for the duration of the summer tournament. The backline trio of Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Harry Maguire will be in front of Jordan Pickford in goal. The 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 will keep the emphasis on high pressing wing-backs playing outside and allowing Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, and Harry Kane to operate in the center of the field. The world-class talent at each level of the field, combined with the tactical brilliance of Southgate, allows England to be extremely dynamic in how they operate — both to match up for opponent and game situation.

The draw initially appears quite favorable for England. They are significant favorites to win Group D and listed at prices of -115, -300 and -245 to win their first three matches. Where the hype starts to draw some scrutiny is in the fact that the one qualifying loss for England was to fellow Group D rivals Czech Republic. In the most recent international competition (2021 Nations League), England did not even advance from their group, finishing third to Belgium and Denmark.

English player to watch

Name: Harry Kane

Age: 27

Position: Striker

At odds of +500, Harry Kane is the favorite to win top goalscorer at Euro 2020. Kane enters the tournament in strong form, scoring 21 goals in 30 matches for Tottenham. The No. 10 has scored 34 goals in 53 career matches with the national team and is the main benefactor of a dynamic offensive attack. With a tighter group, the main angle behind backing Kane at such short odds must be correlated to a belief that England can make it to at least the semifinals.

Player prop to bet: Kane top goalscorer (+500)

England prediction

Best bet: None

England is a deserving co-favorite, especially with a home-field advantage built in that is superior to that supporting any other team. The names and firepower are all in place, however, the road is not particularly easy. If they hold and win their group, they get the second-best team between Portugal, France, and Germany in the knockout stage — teams that are priced at +500, +600, and +800, respectively, to win the tournament. This tournament is extremely tight at the top. If home-field advantage is the differentiating factor for bettors, England is the play. Otherwise, bettors may want to bet against England in the knockout stages.
