Against the Spread (ATS) Pick

Illinois beat Iowa in the most recent meeting between these teams, with the Fighting Illini topping the Hawkeyes 78-76 on March 8, 2020. A lot has changed since then, with Iowa now a Top-10 team with the best offense in college basketball. However, the Illini should be feeling pretty good about their chances in this one.

One thing that bodes well for Illinois in this game is the fact that Kofi Cockburn is manning the paint. Cockburn is averaging 17.4 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game this season, and he is just a giant, giant body. That’s significant when playing against Iowa, as Luka Garza is a Player of the Year candidate that outmuscles his opponents on a nightly basis. Against Cockburn, that won’t be as easy. If Garza isn’t able to dominate like usual, it could make things a bit harder on his teammates to get open looks.

As for the Illini, Ayo Dosunmu, who averages 21.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game, should be able to really pick apart a weak Hawkeyes defense. Dosunmu can score at all three levels and should be a thorn in Iowa’s side all night. Adam Miller is another guy that might be able to get it going here. Miller can get hot in a hurry and this is the perfect complement for a player like Dosunmu.

PREDICTION: Illinois -1.5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

The Over has hit in 10 of Iowa’s 15 games this season, and it has also come in for eight of Illinois’ 14 games. For as good as Iowa is offensively — the Hawkeyes are first in adjusted offensive efficiency this season (all efficiency stats according to KenPom.com) — the team is rather lousy on the other end. Iowa just barely cracks the Top 100 in adjusted defensive efficiency, which is why the team is often involved in shootouts. That shouldn’t change against the Fighting Illini, who are ninth in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency. Both of these teams are loaded with guards that can score, and you should expect all of them to put on a show here.

PREDICTION: Over 164.5 (-110)
