Two of the NBA’s more disappointing teams in 2021 will clash on Wednesday night, with the Dallas Mavericks heading to Boston to take on the Celtics.

A slow start forced Dallas to continue to work to make up ground on a tough conference throughout the first half of the season, while Boston has appeared undermanned throughout the season with trade rumors following throughout.

Here are our best NBA betting free picks and predictions for Mavericks vs. Celtics on March 31.

Mavericks vs Celtics odds

The line opened at Dallas -1.5, with early action on the Celtics moving the line to Mavs -1. The total started at 225.5, but Under money has dropped it to 224.5. Check back later for a full report from Patrick!

Against the spread (ATS) pick

Despite climbing all the way to seventh in the Western Conference, the Mavs – 24-21 SU and 21-24 ATS – have yet to string together a consistent run as a strong team. Dallas is 5-5 SU and ATS Over its last 10 contests, with a couple of strong games – such as wins over the Clippers and Nuggets – mixed in with a few poor performances, including losses to the lowly Thunder and underwhelming Pacers and Pelicans teams.

The Celtics, 23-24 SU and 22-25 ATS, have been similarly underwhelming this season—so much so, in fact, that GM Danny Ainge spoke about the team’s desire to add a player via trade on multiple occasions ahead of the deadline. By the time last Thursday’s deadline passed, they had brought in just former Magic shooting guard Evan Fournier. The debut for Fournier came at just the right time, as he donned the Celtics uniform for the first time on Monday night with All-Star guard Jaylen Brown out with a hip injury.

Unfortunately, Fournier was of little help in Brown’s absence, as the Frenchman went 0 for 10 from the field in a 115-109 loss. Boston has been troubled all season long, and with its second-best player’s status in doubt ahead of this one, we’re happily going against the Cs.

PREDICTION: Mavericks -1 (-110)

Over/Under pick

Both the Mavs and Celtics have been middling O/U teams on the year, with Dallas at 20-25 and Boston 25-22 O/U. Both offenses have undergone fairly inexplicable struggles on the season and they sit alongside one another in offensive rating, with the Mavs 11th and the Celtics 12th.

With Luka Doncic initiating everything, the Mavs’ offense should be able to sleepwalk to a Top-5 rating at worst, while Boston boasts two All-Star wings—the type of building blocks every team dreams of. Instead, both teams’ offenses have been inconsistent and often mediocre.

With two unreliable offenses coming together, we are going Under in this one.

PREDICTION: Under 224.5 (-110)

Player prop pick

When these two teams met last month, Doncic was red-hot and Boston was without answers, as Luka posted a 31-point, 10-rebound and 8-assist line on over 50 percent shooting from the field, including 75 percent from three. Doncic topped off his night with two tiebreaking threes in the final minute, including the game-winner with a tenth of a second left.

While the Celtics were missing their best defender in that one in Marcus Smart, there’s little reason to think this one will be any different. Smart has been poor all season and only just returned from an injury, while his inclusion in trade talks no doubt impacted his play.

Plus, while Smart will be in the lineup, Brown – arguably Boston’s most important defender this season – may not be. Regardless of who is tasked with slowing down Doncic, they won’t have success.

PREDICTION: Luka Doncic Points + Assists + Rebounds Over 44.5 (-120)

  • Mavericks -1 (-110)
  • Under 224.5 (-110)
  • Luka Doncic Points + Assists + Rebounds Over 44.5 (-120)
