Against the spread (ATS) pick

The biggest story of the opening round was Oral Roberts, which became the ninth No. 15 seed to ever upset a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament (and the first since 2016) in beating Big Ten powerhouse Ohio State with a 75-72 overtime victory.

What’s most impressive for the Golden Eagles is not just that they pulled off the upset as 15-point underdogs, but they did so by outplaying Ohio State—and doing so in a game that wasn’t a shootout.

The Golden Eagles, 10th in the nation at 81.8 points per game, put up just 75 points in an overtime win (64 in regulation) but managed to contain a Buckeyes team that was fourth in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency. Despite sitting 246th in adjusted defensive efficiency, they held Ohio State to 21.3 percent shooting from three (5 of 23), while limiting Justice Sueing to seven points and forcing Duane Washington Jr. into a 7-of-23 effort in the game.

The next Goliath in Oral Roberts’ sights are the Florida Gators of the SEC, who also needed to grind out an overtime victory, knocking off Virginia Tech 75-70 despite a subpar performance from star player Tre Mann.

Mann appeared very timid overall throughout the win, scoring just 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting, which was well below the 22.7 points 13.4 shots per game he was averaging over his last five games. Colin Castleton picked up the slack for the Gators, dropping 19 points and 14 rebounds in a game that was rarely beyond five points for either team.

Florida’s biggest flaw – its volatility – was on full display against the Hokies, as it shot 56.5 percent from the field (its fourth-highest mark this season) but also committed 18 turnovers (its third-most all year).

The Gators snapped a four-game ATS losing streak, but with their tendency to go into ruts, and Oral Roberts riding the momentum of a huge victory, we’re going to back the Golden Eagles with the points.

PREDICTION: Oral Roberts +7.5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

The Golden Eagles, facing a potent offense in Ohio State, failed to hit the Over…even with an extra five minutes.

The Gators finished over their total, but only did so in overtime—their regulation total would have been the eighth Under in the last 10 Florida contests.

Oral Roberts isn’t known for defense but just got some first-hand experience in how making a few stops – and putting the effort to contain the opposing team’s top players – can help lead to a victory.

This total is only 4.5 points lower than their opening game but in facing a slightly-weaker offense, and slightly better defense, in Florida, we’re going the opposite direction with the Golden Eagles on Sunday and betting the Under.

PREDICTION: Under 149 (-110)
