Well, it turns out, that maybe having your best players is important to winning basketball games. The Toronto Raptors found that out last night after getting blasted by the Detroit Pistons of all teams.

And it’s sounding like the Raps will be shorthanded once again as they travel to Boston to take on the Celtics in the second half of a back-to-back. It’s no surprise the Celtics are 8-point favorites, but is that enough points to consider backing the Raps?

Find out in our free NBA picks and predictions for Raptors vs. Celtics on Thursday, March 4 with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

It’s not often you see an NBA team go from a 7.5-point favorite to an 8-point underdog in the span of 24 hours, but that’s exactly what happened with the Raptors.

Toronto was without Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and OG Anunoby, as well as head coach Nick Nurse due to COVID-19 protocols in Wednesday’s 129-105 loss to the Pistons. And it’s sounding like none of them will be available until after the All-Star break.

What was most troubling about the Raptors’ loss was their effort on the defensive end against the Pistons. Detroit is one of the worst shooting teams in the NBA but shot 53 percent from the field, including 20-41 from 3-point range.

Now, the Raps must deal with a Celtics team that’s finding its groove. Boston has won three in a row (2-1 ATS) and is it a coincidence that Kemba Walker is playing his best basketball of the season? The C’s point guard is averaging 26 points on 45.5 percent shooting, including 44.8 percent from deep over the last three games.

The Celtics and Raptors are usually an intriguing Atlantic Division matchup but with Toronto’s absences, the talent gap is far more glaring. When you include the fact that the already shorthanded team is playing its second game in as many nights, it’s impossible to fade the Celtics in this spot.

PREDICTION: Celtics -8 (-110)

Over/Under pick

The total for this matchup opened at a relatively low 217 and bettors were quick to jump on the Over, moving the number up to 220.5, and that’s high enough for us to consider the Under.

First and foremost, the Raptors are going to have trouble scoring again. Toronto put up just 105 points against a not-good Pistons team and had lineups on the court where Matt Thomas was the best scorer. That’s about as bad as it’s been in the Kyle Lowry era.

Boston has been a middle-of-the-pack defensive team this season, but it should have no trouble holding down this Raptors lineup.  While at the other end of the court, the Celtics are playing well, but still average a mediocre 111.1 points per game.

We’re betting the Raps can’t do enough, allowing the Celtics to take their foot off the gas and this one to slide Under the number.

PREDICTION: Under 220.5 (-110)

Player prop pick

The Raptors only had two reliable scorers available in Wednesday’s game against the Pistons – Norman Powell and, of course, Lowry.

The Raptors’ franchise icon put up 21 points on just 11 shots in last night’s game and afterward admitted that he could have shot more, but wanted to get his teammates more involved. Lowry may try to shoulder more of the load against the Celtics.

With Lowry averaging 21.7 points on a ridiculous 60.6 percent shooting over his last three games, we like him to go Over his point total in this one.

PREDICTION: Kyle Lowry Over 21.5 Points (-110)
