The Ottawa Senators are not only losing games—they’re getting spanked in the process.

The Senators look to put the brakes on a five-game losing streak Wednesday night as they wrap up a two-game mini-NHL betting series in Vancouver. Ottawa has struggled mightily in recent games, having been outscored 17-5 in their last three contests to sink to the bottom of the North Division.

And the task doesn’t get any easier against a Canucks team that easily covered the NHL odds in a 7-1 trouncing in the first matchup for just their second win in the previous seven games.

These are our favorite NHL free picks and predictions for Senators vs. Canucks on January 27, with puck drop set for 8:00 p.m. ET.

Betting Trend to Know

The Over is 5-0 in the previous five head-to-head meetings. Find more NHL betting trends for Senators vs. Canucks.

DraftKings pegged Vancouver -155 chalk to open, dipped to -143, then late last night rebounded to -157, and the moneyline stayed there all day today. As of 5:30 p.m. ET, the Canucks are attracting 84 percent of bets and 89 percent of money. The total opened 6.5 (Under -114) and is now 6.5 flat, with 61 percent of bets/60 percent of cash on the Over.

Puck Line Pick

It’s hard to find reasons for optimism with the Senators, though you could easily have said the same thing about the Canucks before that six-goal win in the previous matchup. The teams were nearly even in shots while the Canucks enjoyed a slight edge in hits—neither team scored with the man-advantage, though Vancouver did score a short-handed goal in the victory.

The jump in odds for the home side from -145 to -160 might deter some bettors (or compel them to take a shot on the Senators at higher odds), but Ottawa is allowing 4.5 goals per game with the lowest save percentage in the league at 86.5 percent. And while any goalie can get hot at anytime, let’s not forget that the Sens are also averaging just 2.5 goals per game on offense.

The Canucks aren’t world-beaters at this point, but they’re plenty good enough to sweep Ottawa out of town.

PREDICTION: Canucks -1.5 (+155)

Over/Under Pick

We haven’t been treated to many Senators-Canucks meetings over the years, but the Over trend is strong here. The teams have combined for 7+ goals in each of their previous five meetings, with the home team winning each of the last four. And you’re still getting a slightly better payout (-105) on the Over than you are on the Under (-115), which is a nice bonus.

As mentioned earlier, the Ottawa defense and goaltending has been atrocious, particularly in recent days. And the scariest part is that this team is almost completely healthy—this is who the Senators are at the moment, and it’s not the least bit encouraging for bettors.

Vancouver, meanwhile, has seen an average of 8.18 goals scored in its first 11 games this season. Wow.

Oddsmakers are strangely hesitant to drive those Over odds down—and you should take advantage.

PREDICTION: Over 6.5 (-105)
