The Stanley Cup could be handed over by the time Thursday night comes to a close. Covers talks about the Game 5 matchup with Jason Simbal, vice president of risk management for CG Technology in Las Vegas, and with an oddsmaker for online site BetNow.

San Jose Sharks at Pittsburgh Penguins – Open: Penguins -150; Move: Penguins -180

Pittsburgh put itself in position to lift the Cup by posting a 3-1 road victory Tuesday night to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. It was the first meeting in the finals decided by more than goal and left the Sharks even more desperate, now needing a win to extend the series, but having to go back to Pittsburgh to get it.

And bettors don’t seem to think that will happen.

“We opened Pittsburgh -150, and they’ve been betting pretty much all Penguins since then,” Simbal said of the action at CG’s books, which include The Cosmopolitan, Venetian and Hard Rock. “They’re taking the Pens on the moneyline and on the puckline (-1.5 at +175). They’re basically just betting the favorite anywhere that it’s being offered.”

So Pittsburgh is now -180 on the moneyline, with San Jose +160 on the buyback. BetNow is seeing a similar trend after opening the Penguins at -165.

“We have gotten a few wagers for the Sharks here and there, but the action is almost all for the Penguins,” BetNow’s oddsmaker said. “We expect a larger amount of bets to come in (closer to game time).”

The total has been stable at 5, with Simbal saying CG books have seen some small bets to the over, while BetNow’s oddsmaker said the under has been a big favorite for bettors.

Whether Pittsburgh ends the series tonight or San Jose manages to extend it, CG won’t have a problem with the outcome in its futures book.

“We’re good both ways,” Simbal said. “We’re actually slightly better to the Penguins, but we’re good no matter what.”
