Against the Spread (ATS) Pick

Washington State couldn’t keep the road run going against Oregon State on Saturday. The Cougars, coming off wins at Oregon and Washington, were edged 68-66 and looked very much like a team playing in its fourth straight away game down the stretch, going more than four minutes without a point late in the second half.

Now, Wazzu is back in Pullman with a little downtime before battling the Bruins. The Cougars have been sharp defensively for the bulk of the season and have shown some complementary efforts on offense recently, averaging 72.3 points over their last three games. That’s up from 67.1 points before those contests and remember, those efforts all came on the road.

UCLA’s offense has been almost non-existent over the past two outings, scoring a mere 48 points in the loss to Southern Cal on the heels of a 57-point showing in a win over Oregon State on January 30. The Bruins were a collective 34-for-109 (31 percent) from the field in that pair of games, including an ice-cold 9-for-43 (21 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Bruins could also be without the services of frontcourt standouts Cody Riley (ankle) and Jalen Hill (personal), who combine for 16.7 points and 11.5 rebounds per game while also plugging up the paint on defense. Head coach Mick Cronin said he didn’t know Hill’s status for Thursday and tabbed Riley as day-to-day after limited practice this week.

PREDICTION: Washington State +4 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

Washington State lost their last matchup with UCLA, falling 91-61 (Over 132.5) at Pauley Pavilion on January 14. The Cougars were playing in their third straight game away from home (third of four straight on the road) in that meeting and starting guard Noah Williams was slowed by injury.

The Bruins dominated the glass 36-20, including 12 offensive rebounds, in that matchup. UCLA is ranked 38th in rebound rate (53.8 percent) and 34th in second-chance scoring (4.5 chances per game), but without Riley and Hill beefing up the interior against a very big WSU lineup (12th in average height), those putbacks and second looks won’t come with ease.

Wazzu could also be down a big man, with Dishon Jackson listed as questionable for Thursday. The 6-foot-10 center has had a bigger role in the offense since the New Year. He’s averaging just over six points on the season but has posted double figures in four of his last seven outings. Jackson left Saturday’s game with an ankle injury and is expected to miss a couple of contests.

Washington State has played just two home games since January 7 and is allowing only 62.5 points against in those games – versus 72.8 points from opponents on the road. The Cougars are 3-8 Over/Under on Friel Court, compared to 5-2 O/U on the road.

PREDICTION: Under 129 (-110)
