Capitals win in OT

Washington picked up a 2-1 overtime victory at home Friday night over Columbus to improve to 27-7-5 on the season. T.J. Oshie scored the game-winner with 1:47 left in the extra session on the power play with assists going to Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin. After a scoreless first period, the Capitals fell behind 1-0 midway through the second period. Carl Hagelin tied it at 1-1 with 13:47 left in regulation on a goal assisted by Richard Panik and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Ilya Samsonov registered 27 saves on 28 shots in the winning effort.

Hurricanes fall at Rangers

Carolina lost by a score of 5-3 Friday night at New York to drop to 22-14-2 on the season. Lucas Wallmark gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead with 14:45 left in the first period with an assist courtesy of Teuvo Teravainen. The Rangers scored the game’s next four goals to take a 4-1 advantage in the second period before Carolina got one back on a Brett Pesce goal with 2:49 to go in the second on assists by Wallmark and Brock McGinn. Sebastian Aho brought the Hurricanes within 4-3 with 18:20 remaining in the third period off assists from Nino Niederreiter and Joel Edmundson. New York added an insurance goal with 6:11 to play. James Reimer suffered the loss between the pipes as he surrendered five goals on 24 shots.

NHL Betting Trends

The Capitals are 7-1 in their last eight games as an underdog. Washington is 16-5 in its last 21 road games.

The Hurricanes are 31-14 in their last 45 games as a favorite. Carolina is 5-1 in the last six meetings.

The Hurricanes had the Capitals’ number in the postseason last spring, but I think there will be an extra focus by Washington tonight considering that fact. The Capitals have been very difficult to beat all season and getting them at plus money usually feels like a gift. I’d rather take my shot on that side especially with the revenge factor on the board.
