Against the spread (ATS) pick

When the Wizards tangled with the Knicks on Tuesday, NBA fans were surely on the edge of their seats wondering which would prevail when Washington’s league-worst scoring defense clashed a New York team that gives up the fewest points per game in the Association.

Wait, what? Nobody outside of Knicks fans and diehard bettors like us care? I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.

The result was both teams putting up points, but the Knicks put up way more in a 131-113 beatdown, in which they led by almost 30 going into the final frame. It was a much-needed win for New York, which had lost four of its last six games, but it’s hard to fault the .500 Knicks for stumbling against Philadelphia (twice), Brooklyn and Milwaukee.

However, the Knicks have still been covering spreads lately. Tuesday’s win moved them to 4-1-1 ATS in their last six, and they’ve covered in seven out of their last eight games against teams with losing records—and losers are exactly what the Wizards are.

After a strong stretch in mid-late February, where it went 7-1 SU and ATS with wins over the Lakers, Clippers and Nuggets (twice!), Washington has fallen off a cliff, going 2-9 SU and 5-6 ATS. The one thing of particular interest is that the Wiz have done well when facing larger spreads, going 5-1 ATS in their last six when posted as 6.5-point ‘dogs or bigger, but have lost five straight (ATS and outright) when the spread is tighter.

New York has now played Washington twice this season, winning both games by 18 points. Tonight’s line still sits at just -3, and with the Knicks playing solid ball, especially at Madison Square Garden, I’m expecting the ‘Bockers to make it a perfect 3-0 SU and ATS against one of the East’s saddest teams.

PREDICTION: Knicks -3 (-110)

Covers NBA betting analysis

Over/Under pick

The Knicks are No. 1 in the NBA in giving up just 105 ppg and are one of the biggest Under machines this season (18-26 O/U), but there’s actually a lot of reasons to like this game going Over the total.

While Tuesday’s win broke a three-game Under streak (two games against a Joel Embiid-less Sixers sandwiching a game versus a bad Orlando squad), New York had actually seen the Over hit in seven of its eight games prior. The Knicks are averaging 106.7 ppg in March after putting up 109.1 in February – well above the 102.1 points they averaged in the season’s first two months – while on the other end New York is giving up 108.6 points in March.

On the other side, the Wizards haven’t stopped anyone all season long. They give up 120.2 per game on the year and have ramped that up, allowing 124.1 per contest over their last 10. The Wiz are in the Top 10 in scoring too, however, with 114.9 ppg (led by NBA leading scorer Bradley Beal) so Overs are always in play.

Early betting action supports the Under, dropping the opening 226.5 down to 224.5. But that just provides more value for us. Of the last eight games where the Knicks have won by 10+ points, seven times they’ve followed that up by going Over in their next game. Also, seven of New York’s last eight games on regular one-day rest have gone Over, and Tuesday’s matchup went Over as well.

Let’s believe in the Knicks’ recent higher-scoring ways and back the Over again too.

PREDICTION: Over 224.5 (-110)

Player prop pick

Julius Randle has always put up some nice scoring stats, but he’s truly blossomed into an all-around dynamic threat for the Knicks this season. In addition to averaging a career-high 23.3 points, he’s also posting career bests in rebounds (10.9), assists (5.9) and 3-point percentage (42.8).

Randle is hitting roughly two triples per game this season but he’s really ramped it up the last two months, averaging 2.6 made threes in February and 2.4 made threes in March. He’s topped 2.5 treys in four of his last six games and went 7 for 10 against the Wiz on Tuesday.

It’s not a shock that Washington – as the league’s worst scoring defense – is one of the league’s worst teams at defending the three, allowing opponents to shoot better than 40 percent from deep over its last 10 games.

With Randle rolling, we’re expecting him to continue his hot-shooting ways and look to cash in on his made threes prop at plus money.

PREDICTION: Julius Randle Over 2.5 made threes (+110)
